Liverpool have made Borussia Monchengladbach star Florian Neuhaus their top target to replace Georginio Wijnaldum this summer. The Dutchman will see his contract expire at the end of the season and the Reds have failed to reach an agreement with him over a renewal.
Liverpool transfer target Neuhaus has opened up over the speculation surrounding his future.
The midfielder has been reported to be the top replacement choice of Jurgen Klopp’s should Wijnaldum leave at the end of the season.
And that scenario looks almost certain with the Dutchman’s contract expiring on June 30.
Talks had gone on since last year but no agreement could be found amid interest from Barcelona.
Ronald Koeman has been desperate to reunite with the player he worked with an international level and the feeling appears to be mutual.
With Wijnaldum such a key player at Anfield, a suitable replacement is necessary and Neuhaus ticks all the boxes.
However, the 23-year-old would not come cheap and has been reported to cost as much as £35m.
In today’s market, that could prove tough for Liverpool to conjure up – but after a summer without spending, a splurge could be its way on Merseyside.
Nevertheless, the Gladbach star was not giving much away and insisted he was relaxed amid all the speculation surrounding him.
“I have a contract until 2024 and I have very big goals for this season,” Neuhaus told Kicker. “That’s what I’m concentrating on now. [Transfer talk] is really not a big issue for me now.
“I play at Borussia, I have a contract, and we as a club are still pursuing very big goals this season. I can’t say what will happen in the summer at the moment.
“I’m also very relaxed about the future. Borussia is a club where I was able to develop excellently and where everything is there. I know what I have with Borussia.”
