Man Utd already have plan for a new striker should Cavani quit club in January

Manchester United have drawn up plans to replace Edinson Cavani if the forward decides to leave the club in January, according to reports in France.

Cavani, 34, has long been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and is reported to be one of 17 players currently unhappy with the situation at the Red Devils.

The Uruguayan veteran has been forced to play a bit-part role since his move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, despite boasting an impressive goalscoring record.

He hit 17 goals in 39 matches last term as United finished second in the Premier League and reached the final of the Europa League under previous boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Cavani has found opportunities even more limited this season following the summer arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

The former Napoli ace has been restricted to just eight appearances in the top-flight, only four of which have been starts.

With his contract set to run out in June, it would be no surprise to see the marksman move elsewhere during the January window.

And according to French publication L'Equipe, PSG star Mauro Icardi is being considered as a possible replacement if both Cavani and fellow wantaway star Anthony Martial decide to leave Old Trafford.

Should United allow Cavani to leave in January? Let us know in the comments section.

Icardi, who is married to the gorgeous WAG Wanda Nara, has scored 38 goals in 82 games for PSG since moving from Inter Milan in 2019.

But amid competition with the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, the 28-year-old has struggled for consistent game time this season.

Nevertheless, he has still managed a respectable return of five goals in 20 appearances – a tally not dissimilar to that of Cavani at Old Trafford.

United have not made contact with the French giants over the forward but are said to be preparing an approach, if Martial and Cavani head closer to the exit door.

The report also says that Juventus have been linked with a move for Icardi, who enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career so far in Serie A with Inter.

Juve are said to be interested in taking the Argentina international on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy him for £30million included in the deal.
