Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘can’t rely’ on Martial and urged to make Rashford call

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been urged to give Marcus Rashford a chance at centre-forward instead of Anthony Martial, because Martial can’t be relied on to be a world-class striker. That’s the opinion of former Liverpool player Steve Nicol.

Martial is yet to find the net in the Premier League so far this season, despite starting all three games as a central striker.

The Frenchman ended last season as one of the most prolific strikers in the league, scoring six goals in his last eight games.

United brought in Edinson Cavani on transfer deadline day to act as competition for the 24-year-old, and the Uruguayan is expected to play in cup games while challenging for a place in the league side.

Speaking earlier this week, club icon Paul Scholes explained that signing a world-class centre-forward should have been United’s top priority this summer, because their current options aren’t good enough.

But Nicol believes Rashford is United’s best option at the moment up front, and should be given a chance through the middle.

Rashford is currently used on the left wing, with Mason Greenwood on the right and Martial as a sole striker.

And speaking to ESPN FC, Nicol explained that part of that reason is that Martial won’t track back and offer as much defensively as Rashford will.

“The fact is, you can’t rely on him,” he said of Martial.

“When you play for Manchester United, you need people you can rely on.

“When I see him, I don’t think he’s a centre-forward. But let me put it another way, he’s not a world-class centre-forward.

“He’s a centre-forward who can score goals, but not when it counts.

“He’s a bit like Lukaku, because he scored loads of goals before him and they got rid of him.

“I actually think Rashford is a better centre-forward.

“I think they should give him some time at centre-forward, but I think they don’t because he can do a bit defensively, he’ll track back.

“It’s part of the way United are playing now, they’re playing Martial at centre-forward maybe because Rashford can get back and do some defending.

“I think Rashford is a far better centre-forward.”
