Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer contemplating Donny van de Beek and Alex Telles plan

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering whether to give Bruno Fernandes a new role on the left flank of his attack, reports say. The Netherlands international is yet to start in the Premier League since his £40million move from Ajax. But that could be set to change with Steve Bruce’s Newcastle awaiting on Saturday night.

Manchester United signed Van de Beek from Ajax at the start of September.

But, six weeks into life at Old Trafford, and the midfielder is still waiting on a first Premier League club for the start.

Van de Beek has scored against Crystal Palace in the top flight but only been used as a substitute against the Eagles, Brighton and tottenham so far.

Solskjaer has been criticised for his handling of the 23-year-old but, according to the Manchester Evening News, he’s now contemplating a change.

It’s said the Norwegian has contemplated playing him on the left wing, with Alex Telles then used on the overlap.

Telles arrived from Porto on transfer deadline day and is expected to walk straight into the side, particularly with Luke Shaw struggling for form early on.

Van de Beek is said to be open to playing on the wing, rather than in his natural position of central midfield.

And United are doing all they can to beef up the Netherlands international, with the midfield maestro poised to be given a special diet to help his muscle growth.

The Red Devils have done similar things with Cristiano Ronaldo, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao in the past – albeit to varying levels of success.

And they’re hopeful they’ll see Van de Beek improve over time, despite his stuttering start so far this term.

Solskjaer insisted the 23-year-old was vital when speaking earlier in the month, saying: “We know how many games we’re going to play and he’s going to be vital.

“He’s proved in every game he’s been a part of that he’s got high quality, he’s such a clever mover, he plays the game simply but effectively, with high quality. He’s knocking on the door.

“He’s got very high footballing intelligence and tactically he’s gone through the Ajax system. Dutch football is tactical, he knows football, he’s got his head screwed on.

“He’s a different type of left-sided player compared to Dan James and Marcus Rashford but coming inside and finding good pockets, why not?

“He can play loads of different positions, which sometimes is a strength for a player.

“I remember myself sometimes, right-wing, left-wing, centre forward, No 10… Donny is one the coach will always look to have in a squad.”

Solskjaer has shut down talk of division within his ranks ahead of Saturday’s clash with Newcastle, saying: “We’ve been in touch with the ones that have been away and it’s one of those things you have to get over as soon as you can.

“We know any little chance from outside wants to create division.

“Bruno spoke well the other day we are united and have to stay together, we can’t listen to everyone outside, gotta get on with it.

“Bruno has lost two league games and came in February.

“It’s been two in quick succession, he’s not used to losing league games – but welcome to Manchester United.

“This is what happens, [people are] gonna try and create a division between us but it’s not gonna happen, this is a group that wants to work together and stick together.”
