Manchester United are reportedly interested in re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, with Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still in contact with the Portuguese international. Ronaldo, who left United for Real Madrid for a world-record fee in 2009, is believed to be a target for his former side this summer.

His current club, Juventus, look likely to fail in their attempts to qualify for the Champions League next season, which could trigger Ronaldo’s exit.

The Athletic are reporting that agents connected to Juventus insist Cristiano Ronaldo could genuinely leave Italy this summer, in a situation that staff at Old Trafford are monitoring’.

And the report gives four reasons why a deal for the forward, who scored 84 goals in 196 Premier League appearances in his first spell at the club, would be of interest to United.

It is claimed that United would be interested in a move because Ronaldo would command a lower transfer fee due to entering the final 12 months of his contract.

A secondary reason is that he is still banging in goals on the biggest stages, with the forward scoring 29 goals in 33 games in Serie A this season, despite his side’s poor campaign.

It looks likely that he will beat another former United striker, Romelu Lukaku, to the league’s golden boot.

Ronaldo’s commercial pull would also boost shirt and sponsorship deals – while it would be relatively low risk as the forward would be keen to pen a short-term deal.

The Athletic also state that Solskjaer is still in touch with his former United team-mate, who ‘provided a character reference for Bruno Fernandes before he was signed last year’.

And the United boss would supposedly be in favour of a decision to re-sign Ronaldo if the finances involved were right for the Red Devils.

United striker Edinson Cavani recently signed a new contract with the club but there could still be room for another forward in the squad.

The Uruguayan has been in fine goalscoring form of late, scoring nine goals in his last ten games.

The Ronaldo transfer could begin a domino-effect of deals this summer.

Juventus will potentially target Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann as a replacement for Ronaldo, according to Spanish publication Sport.

Griezmann has struggled to adjust to life at the Nou Camp following his £107million move from Atletico Madrid in 2019.

He could be allowed to move on so that Ronald Koeman can bring in his own players to start rebuilding the club.

And Barcelona could rival Manchester City and, potentially United, for Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The 27-year-old has expressed his desire to leave the north London club this summer.
