Man Utd branded a ‘shambles’ and issued Ole Gunnar Solskjaer transfer warning

Manchester United have been a “shambles” in every game this season, and the board needs to support Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the transfer market by signing the right players. That’s the opinion of Alan Shearer, who believes United’s defence was let down on Sunday by the midfield.

United were battered 6-1 at home by Tottenham on Sunday in a dismal display.

The Red Devils took the lead after the first minute through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, but were abysmal from there.

Son Heung-Min and Harry Kane both bagged doubles, while Serge Aurier and Tanguy Ndombele added to the rout.

United fans are currently pleading with the club to splash the cash on deadline day to improve the squad, with Donny van de Beek the only new face through the door so far.

The £40million midfielder is still yet to start in the league, and only made it off the bench on Sunday against Spurs.

United have already decided against signing a new centre-back this summer, and have been targeting other positions already, with moves for Jadon Sancho and Edinson Cavani preferred.

But Shearer believes Solskjaer needs to be backed properly in the transfer market with the right players coming in, saying on Match of the Day 2 that it isn’t hard to see what the club needs.

He said: “You can sit and criticise Man United’s back four, and rightly so because they were awful.

But, they had no protection, whatsoever, from anyone in that midfield. Particularly Pogba and Matic.

“They were a shambles against Crystal Palace when they conceded three, they were a shambles against Brighton and were fortunate.

“They conceded all those goals today, and it should have been more.

“I can think of other words that we can use, other than shambles.

“My worry for Ole is that why haven’t they backed him?

“Why are they not investing? It doesn’t take a genius to figure out what they need.

“Why aren’t they going out and getting those players that they need?”

Jermaine Jenas, who was appearing on Match of the Day 2 with Shearer, was also critical of their transfer activity, and claimed club officials don’t know what they’re doing.

He said: “We’ve been talking about the centre-back issue, I still think they have a centre-forward issue.

“No matter how many players they’ve got, who is going to go and get 25 or 30 goals a season? I don’t know.

“Cavani is coming in, but that’s a last-minute thing.

“All of which adds up to a vision where they don’t know what they’re doing, and it’s worrying.”
