Man Utd fans gush over Bruno Fernandes’s wonder strike for Portugal

Bruno Fernandes looks set to continue his fine form as Portugal gear up to defend their European Championship crown.

The midfielder finished the season as Manchester United's top scorer, bagging 18 Premier League goals as well as 12 assists, ensuring he became the first player in a Red Devils shirt to register 30 goal contributions in a single league season since Robin Van Persie in the 2012/13 campaign.

The 26-year-old was back among the goals for his country, capping off a comfortably victory over Israel with his side's fourth and final goal in stoppage time against an Israel side who struggled to lay a glove on their opponents.

Fernandes thunderous strike to seal the 4-0 victory sparked celebrations from adoring United fans online, who took to Reddit to heap praise on their talisman.

One user wrote: "What a player; our best player since Rooney I dare say."

Another United fanatic claimed: "Supporting Portugal this year because of him."

Some members of the Old Trafford faithful took it as an opportunity to try and debunk the theory Fernandes only scores spot-kicks, writing: "But he 'only scores penalties' -My boy Bruno."

Fernandes was not part of the Portugal side that toppled France on their own patch to secure a 1-0 win and their first ever Euros title in 2016, though he has often discussed where he was when he witnessed the historic moment, alongside two of his French Udinese teammates.

"I remember watching the game alone in my room,” the United midfielder explained to Goal. “Everyone else was watching it on a giant screen. I said no, I'll watch it alone in the room because they'll bring bad luck, so let me stay here.

"I stayed in my room alone. The moment we scored the goal I ran across the hotel! I ran to where they were all watching, screaming all the way from my room to where they were! Screaming!

"I got there and they were obviously devastated, the two French guys, and I was really ecstatic. I think that as a Portuguese, regardless of whether you're actually involved in Portugal's successes or not, you have to feel proud."
