Man Utd fans in a frenzy as summer signing scores debut goal in friendly win
Charlie McNeill has opened his Manchester United account in his first game for the club after he left Man City at the end of last season.
The 17-year-old was confirmed as a United player at the start of the month, after building up a reputation as one of the most prolific young forwards in European football.
McNeill was unveiled as one of the academy’s latest recruit to much acclaim, after netting 600 goals during his time with City.
PA reported last month that United were set to pay an initial fee of just under £750,000 for McNeill, potentially rising to £1.35million with add-on clauses based on his progress.
It was claimed that he made the decision to move after being won over by the first-team pathway at Old Trafford.
United fan McNeill scored a staggering 100 goals and contributed 38 assists in just 72 matches for City’s Under-15s before moving into the Under-18s side.
Having been unable to agree an extension, he left the club earlier this summer, but the clubs are believed to have thrashed out a deal without needing a tribunal as he had not turned 17 when he left.
And McNeill has hit the ground running in his first outing for United’s U18s, netting the second goal in a 2-1 friendly win over West Brom.
Following the game, he took to social media posting his United kit, with the caption: “1 game, 75 mins, 1 goal, 2-1 win”.
Fellow debutant Marc Jurado also netted, but it was McNeill that left United fans on Reddit optimistic about the future.
“First of 600 goals for Us,” one supporter said in response to his goal.
A second posted: "Call me a crazy, deluded idiot, but I'm somehow more excited to watch the under 18's than the first team”.
“Great strike from McNeill,” a third replied, while another fan concluded: “Honestly I'm fine if we're s*** now if we win the treble in 2025”.
