Manchester United fans were stunned when Cristiano Ronaldo wore shinpads with his own face on in Saturday's draw against Everton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side missed the chance to go top of the Premier League after Anthony Martial's first-half strike was cancelled out by Andros Townsend in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo had been benched for the clash, with Solskjaer giving his star signing a rest after his last-gasp goalscoring exploits against Villarreal in midweek.

But the United boss turned to the 36-year-old just before the hour mark as his side looked to build on Martial's opener.

And Ronaldo could be seen strapping on pads bearing his own image as he prepared to come on.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was unable to add to United's goal tally – instead having to watch Townsend copying his iconic 'Siuu' celebration after equalising for Rafa Benitez's side.

But Ronaldo's shinpads certainly caused a stir, with David Seaman's podcast describing them as "the most #Ronaldo thing ever" on Twitter.

Some fans loved it, with one tweeting: "Ronaldo wears Ronaldo shinpads, WHAT A GUY."

"Why not! He’s the f***ing best!" wrote another, adding: "He also has boxers with his own name on them but deal with."

And another said Ronaldo "can do what he wants. One of the GOATs".

But others were less impressed, with one posting: "Does #Ronaldo actually have photos of himself on his shinpads?!" along with a laughing emoji.

Another simply tweeted: "Ronaldo has pictures of himself on his shinpads" with a string of green-faced emojis.

And another wrote: "Ronaldo has shinpads with his own face on them? That pretty accurately sounds him up I think."

His gear also drew a response from fans of his great rival Lionel Messi.

One Barcelona fan, who describes himself in his bio as a "Messi enthusiast", tweeted: "Every player put their loved ones on their shinpads but Ronaldo puts himself."

Ronaldo appeared to storm down the tunnel after Saturday's draw – with former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand saying he was clearly frustrated at the result.

"He stomped down the tunnel, disappointed about the result obviously we’ve all been there," he said on BT Sport.

"I think it’ll be a mixture of things, he’s a man in form, scored five in five, wanted to continue that vein of form and shoot his side to victory, I understand the frustrations and it comes out like that.

"Pogba down the tunnel after him. A club like Manchester United with the depth they have in their squad should be able to get the job done."
