Manchester United are set to head into the January transfer window with three key right-back targets after they failed to recruit cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer. Although Kieran Trippier was one of their aspirations at the time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has supposedly instructed the club’s scouts to find alternatives which could be available for cheaper.
Despite a busy summer of transfer activity, United still have a couple of positions which could be boosted with higher quality cover.
Essentially, right-back and defensive-midfield took a back seat as deals for Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated their summer, tallying a total spend of over £100million.
Wan-Bissaka, the club’s starting right-back at present, has started this season much as he finished the last.
His defensive prowess has never been in question, and while he may have shown flashes of improvement going forward, there are others on the market who can provide more.

The Red Devils opted to stick with Diogo Dalot to provide an attacking alternative, although it has not necessarily gone to plan so far.
Firstly, the youngster has been feeding off scraps when it comes to game time, but when he is given the chance to impress United look weaker defensively.
Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier was touted as the ideal compromise in the summer in terms of a player who can bring both elements to the table, although boss Diego Simeone was intent on keeping the Englishman in Spain.
According to 90min, United scouts have now been instructed to search out right-back options other than Trippier.

James Tavernier has been singled out as one of their key targets. They certainly don’t come much more attacking than the Rangers full-back who notched a staggering 19 goals in all competitions last term.
However, the club may have a hard time prising him away from old foe Steven Gerrard, particularly given how critical he has been to Rangers’ success.
Max Aarons is another name in the mix, a youngster who has been linked with Old Trafford for years even though he is still just 21.
Norwich have struggled badly since their return to the Premier League, so United could pounce on his plummeting morale by offering a way out in January.
Finally, a relatively unknown candidate has emerged in Nathan Patterson.
The young Scotsman is a team-mate of Tavernier’s at Rangers, so the move would come with many of the same complications.
Patterson already has three caps for Scotland as a teenager, but a prospective move depends on whether Solskjaer is keen for an immediate impact or a long-term project.
Whatever the case, one thing seems clear – if Solskjaer is keen to explore other avenues, there are plenty of options to choose from.
