Man Utd ‘knock on Saul Niguez’s door’ with Atletico Madrid willing to sell
Manchester United have 'knocked on the door' of Saul Niguez as they target a move for the Atletico Madrid midfielder.
Saul recently claimed the La Liga title with Atletico but is looking to leave the Spanish capital after over a decade at the club.
His decision to take 'another direction in his career' has attracted interest from Serie A side Juventus as well as United, who have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old in the past.
Despite claiming the league title this season, Saul was only named in the starting-eleven for 22 matches and was used as a substitute on 11 occasions throughout the campaign.
This has led to Saul growing frustrated at his role in the team and has prompted his desire to leave the club, Spanish publication Marca have claimed.
The Atletico midfielder first began gaining the attention of top clubs in five years ago after impressing on Madrid's route to the Champions League final in 2016.
He came close to leaving in the summer of 2019, when the club valued him at €70m (£60m) with a €150m (£129m) release clause, but a move failed to materialise.
There were no ‘substantial offers’ at that point, but they will now respect his decision to leave as long as an offer that 'satisfies all parties' arrives.
Saul was asked about a potential move to Old Trafford prior to the start of this season and delivered the following response:
"I am very flattered that a club like Manchester United, or other teams that ask about me, take me into consideration. For me it is very positive.
“And important people from those clubs [such as Ferdinand] speaking well of me means that I am doing things well at Atletico Madrid.”
