David de Gea has been one of Manchester United’s only shining lights so far this season with a number of spirited performances between the sticks for the Red Devils. But with the shot-stopper coming towards the end of his career, United chiefs have reportedly earmarked Emi Martinez as the Spaniard’s successor with a £50million bid plotted.

The report by the Daily Star states that United’s interests have been piqued by a string of impressive performances since he joined Aston Villa from Arsenal in 2020.

Having been a peripheral figure at the Emirates with six loan spells away from the club in his ten-year tenure, Martinez rose to prominence in June 2020 when he came in for Bernd Leno after the German was injured.

Martinez saw out the rest of the season and starred in the FA Cup final as the Gunners won 2-1 against rivals Chelsea to lift the famous trophy.

His move to Villa Park for £20million has seen him match those same performance levels.

And with that in mind, Martinez has been linked to some of the world’s biggest sides – especially after his exploits for Argentina as they won the 2021 Copa America final.

United have supposedly watched him closely a number of times, and his output has seen him considered as a suitable candidate to become United’s new number one.

De Gea has cemented his place as United’s number one despite cameo appearances from Anders Lindegaard, Victor Valdes, Sergio Romero and Dean Henderson over the years.

But with the latter being put to the side after De Gea’s return to world-class level following a poor spell, there is now more incentive to sign Martinez.

The 31-year-old is under contract until June 2023, giving United another 18 months to decide on their long-term plans.

But the club would only consider a move for Martinez should the keeper leave before the expiration of his contract.

Henderson is reportedly desperate to leave the club given there is no clear route back into the first-team.

And with the World Cup in a year’s time, the Whitehaven-born stopper is keen to come into the reckoning.

The report further goes on to state that United hold an interest in Leeds prodigy Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman has established himself as one of the world’s best young goalkeepers.

Although it would likely be hard to deal with Leeds given their rivalry with Ralf Rangnick’s men.
