Man Utd target Sergio Ramos urged to avoid Cristiano Ronaldo transfer mistake

Transfer update: Tierney, Salah and Anderson latest

The immediate future of Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos seems to be up in the air ahead of next season, with the 34-year-old failing to agree extended terms with the club as of yet. His current contract is set to expire in the summer, which has sparked rumours that he could leave the Spanish capital after a 16-year spell with Los Blancos.

Manchester United and Tottenham have been linked with Ramos in recent weeks, with the defender now able to negotiate a summer move to a foreign club on a free transfer.

However, former Real striker Jorge Valdano is convinced that he will eventually sign a new deal with his current employers.

Valdano is expecting the club to do all they can to ensure Ramos remains on their books, citing their dip in form after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2018 as a key factor behind the need to keep hold of their captain.

After losing the winger to Juventus, Real were dumped out of the Champions League in the first knockout round by Ajax, while Ronaldo failed to do enough during his first season in Italy to beat Barcelona great Lionel Messi to that year’s prestigious Ballon d’Or award.

“He will end up renewing with Real Madrid,” Valdano told Spanish outlet El Transistor. “It would be a mistake on both sides if it were not done.

“The same thing happened with Cristiano. Real Madrid was left without the Champions League and Cristiano without the Ballon d’Or.”

Ramos has continued to feature heavily for the La Liga giants this season, making 17 appearances in all competitions.

He is arguably one of the best central defenders to ever play for Real or indeed any club, boasting four Champions League wins, five La Liga titles and a World Cup triumph among his collection of impressive achievements.

The decorated 34-year-old would greatly improve United’s defence if he were to join next season, according to former striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian marksman, who scored 56 goals in 149 matches for the Red Devils, suggested the club should consider a move for Ramos earlier this month.

“He could bring a lot of experience and steel to any team,” he told Betfair. “Although he is 34, he is still a top player and United could do a lot worse.

“If he is available I can see a lot of teams interested in signing him. At his age of course Real Madrid are reluctant to offer him a long contract.”
