Man Utd to alter transfer plans due to Jadon Sancho despite positive Alex Telles update

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Alex Telles at a discounted price, but have told Porto that they aren’t willing to meet their demands and could now go in a different direction as they look for a new left-back. According to transfer expert Duncan Castles, United are set to ditch their bid for Telles but might now go for a younger and cheaper option.

United are believed to be confident of signing another left-back and winger before the window closes on October 5th

They’ve been expected to strengthen at the back throughout the summer, but are yet to make a move for any of their defensive targets.

The Red Devils were reportedly interested in a deal to sign Porto left-back Telles, with the 27-year-old Brazilian available this summer.

They were offered the chance to sign Real Madrid ace Sergio Reguilon, but rejected the offer after Los Blancos insisted on a buy-back clause.

Now, Castles reports that Porto have lowered their asking price for Telles from €25million [£22.9m] down to just €20m [£18m].

However, United are reportedly unwilling to meet those demands due to their desire to wrap up a deal for Jadon Sancho.

The Borussia Dortmund ace is United’s top target this summer, having already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract.

Dortmund want £108m for the English winger, and United will have to come close to meeting that demand if they’re to sign him before the deadline passes.

And because of that, United are set to change their focus and try to sign a cheaper left-back, Castles told the Transfer Window Podcast.

He said: “We told you some time ago that Manchester United are in the market for a left-back, and they’ve had left-backs offered to them.

“A couple of weeks ago we said one of the left-backs offered to them was Alex Telles, who Porto need and want to sell, and who wants to move elsewhere.

“At the time, Porto were asking for €25million for the player, I’m told that’s now come down to €20million, but I’m told Manchester United have indicated that they’re not ready to pay that.

“They were also offered Reguilon, they rejected that deal. I don’t think it’s surprising they’d reject a deal which Madrid wanted to have the buyback clause in.

“When we first talked about them adding a left-back we said they wanted a younger player who would develop at Manchester United and be play first-team football if necessary, but not come straight in and be a direct replacement for Luke Shaw, who they have a lot of faith in.

“They want to pair the two in the position, move Brandon Williams over to right-back to be a backup for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and sell Diogo Dalot.

“I think that’s where you’d expect the primary focus to be. Jadon Sancho is still the primary focus and they believe they’ve got a deal in place, they remain confident they’ll get that through with Borussia Dortmund.

“That’s going to be an expensive deal, therefore if you’re improving at left-back and the left side of central defence, they’ll look to cheaper deals rather than experienced and expensive players like Alex Telles.”
