Man Utd transfer round-up: Concern over Arsenal hijacking centre-back deal

Manchester United missed out on primary transfer target Jadon Sancho this summer, but were compensated by the arrivals of a handful of South Americans.

Alex Telles, Facundo Pellistri and European goalscoring stalwart Edinson Cavani all joined the club late in the window.

Ajax’s Donny van de Beek was an earlier addition and the Netherlands international already has his first goal from midfield, scoring the consolation in a 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.

United will be keen to avoid such a scenario where they leave their business until after the season has started once again, and will already be looking ahead to future transfer targets.

Here is the latest Manchester United transfer round-up.

Telles and Pellistri plan revealed

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed his plan to integrate new signings Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri straight away, with a debut against Newcastle United this weekend a distinct possibility, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Solskjaer feels the best way to get his new additions up to speed is to blood them into first-team affairs as quickly as possible.

Telles has been on international duty with Brazil but has been recovering in Manchester following a long-haul flight prior to joining up for first-team training.

"All three have got something different to what we have and will definitely come in and help us. The group are looking forward to having them join in," the Norwegian is quoted as saying in reference to Telles, Facundo Pellistri and Edinson Cavani.

Arsenal to dash United centre-back hopes

Manchester United’s shaky form at the beginning of this season has largely been down to a lack of defensive solidity.

Consequently, there have been question marks over the long-term viability of United’s centre-back duo of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

However, a mooted move for Villarreal’s Pau Torres could be hijacked by Arsenal, who are poised to challenge any bid from Old Trafford.

Torres has been a reliable presence at the heart of the Villarreal defence over the past two seasons, earning a £35million price tag as well as five Spain caps.

Spanish outlet Todo Fichajes report Arsenal are confident an agreement can be reached, which would leave United having to search for alternative targets to shore up their defence.

United supporters hopeful of future Sancho deal

The long-running Jadon sancho transfer saga does not appear to have subsided, with United fans urging the star to join the club next summer.

The Mirror reported supporters have commented on Sancho’s latest Instagram upload which he posted following the conclusion of this October’s international break.

The caption “JS7 loading…” followed by a fire emoji, was read by some sections of the United faithful as a cryptic clue to a deal potentially being agreed in future.

The transfer failed this summer due to a breakdown in communication between the two clubs, with Manchester United failing to believe Borussia Dortmund’s August 10 ultimatum was a legitimate threat to their chances of signing the England winger.
