Man Utd transfer target Dayot Upamecano breaks silence over potential Old Trafford switch
Dayot Upamecano has broken his silence over a potential move to Manchester United this summer after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the RB Leipzig star his No 1 target following a failed attempt to capture Jadon Sancho.
United are expected to wait until next summer to sign Sancho after talks with Borussia Dortmund reached an impasse.
Solskajer has apparently switched his focus to finding a new centre-back partner for Harry Maguire.
Upamecano has been identified as the ideal candidate and the Red Devils are reportedly drawing up plans to make a bid.
However, the 21-year-old signed a new contract with Leipzig in June and he insists his immediate future will remain in Germany.
“I extended my contract with Leipzig because I feel good with my team-mates,” Upamecano said.
“My coach is giving me confidence. He’s learning as well, but he gives me confidence and it improves my level.
“I’ve been in Leipzig for more than three years, I feel good. I’ve been in demand, I talked to some clubs, it’s true, but I’m not in a hurry.
“We’ll see what happens in the future.”
Upamecano’s stock rose as he helped Leipzig reach the Champions League semi-finals last month.
The Frenchman produced a masterclass against Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa in the quarter-finals.
“Obviously when you play a Champions League semi-final, your status changes, especially because it was the first semis for Leipzig. We wrote history,” he added.
“When I was in Portugal, I wasn’t paying attention to what happened outside of it until the end.
“Because I didn’t play in Ligue 1, I was just in academies in France, I became known in Germany.”
Upamecano would have been available for just £54m but that release clause was scrapped when he penned a new three-year contract.
There are rumours that a new clause was added that could allow him to leave for £38m next summer.
