Man Utd warned not to make Paul Pogba mistake with Harry Kane transfer

Manchester United must ensure Harry Kane is fully fit if they attempt to sign him in the next transfer window, says former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson. Kane has not played for Tottenham since January 1 due to a serious hamstring injury. The England captain has also faced spells on the sidelines due to ankle injuries in each of the three seasons previous to the current campaign.

Kane sparked speculation over his future last month by claiming he would not be prepared to stay at Spurs if he could not see progression in terms of challenging for major honours.

United have been linked with the 26-year-old in recent weeks though Tottenham are adamant they will not sell to a rival.

Robson says Kane will return to his best but says United must be sure of his fitness before making a move.

The pundit claims Paul Pogba was not fully fit when United signed him for a world-record transfer fee of £89million in 2016, which affected his start at the club.

“I think [Kane’s] had these ankle injuries which have obviously been a problem for him,” Robson told ESPN FC.

“He’s still a good age, I think he will get back fit and be a top-class player again, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

“But before you buy someone you want to make sure they are fully fit and they are playing well.

“You don’t want to buy someone when they’re half fit and they come in and don’t do the job properly, that’s what’s happened on several other occasions.

  • Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho identifies Harry Kane replacement

“Paul Pogba when he first went to Manchester United wasn’t fully fit, they thrust him into the team and he didn’t play well for the first six or seven weeks and everybody moaned and said it’s not a good signing.

“Harry Kane has to be fully fit if he is to go anywhere, and particularly Manchester United.”

But despite Kane’s injury woes, Robson would prioritise his signing ahead of Jadon Sancho and Kalidou Koulibaly.

“I would go for Harry Kane,” he added.

“United need a centre-forward, someone who can lead the line, play with his back to goal, score goals, be good in the air.

“They don’t have that kind of centre-forward who can do that.

“[Odion] Ighalo did a good job for them in the four or five games he played, but that’s something they need.

“They need a centre-forward who can lead the line, Harry Kane does that.

“He can score goals out of nothing, he can link up with play, he can be the all-round centre-forward.

“If you prioritise one player, it has to be Harry Kane for Manchester United.”
