Marcos Rojo could be handed a lifeline at Manchester United by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Despite returning on loan to his native Argentina with Estudiantes back in January, the defender seems determined to get his Premier League career back on track this season.
The 30-year-old has not been considered as a possible partner for Harry Maguire in recent months, and is in the same boat at Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
However, the former Sporting man might have boosted his way up the pecking order of late thanks to this extra effort at Carrington which has included double training sessions.
ESPN have reported that Rojo has been staying late for extra training, and has done so every day since he returned to Manchester from Argentina earlier in the summer.
They add that his Norwegian boss has been left impressed by that dedication, but that Solskjaer is still on the look out for another left-footed central defender.
Rojo said last year that he had an ‘incredible’ relationship with Solskjaer, but admitted that the recent years of his career have been hampered by injuries.
He said in April 2019: “Since he [Ole] arrived, he’s had an incredible relationship with me.
”When he got here, he told me I was part of his plans and that he wanted me to get myself fully fit.
“He helped me a lot because I was coming off a bad run of injuries and he told me to not worry and just concentrate calmly on making progress in my rehab and recovery.
“That was important to me and then as I've said, he allowed me to go back to Argentina to be with my family a while.”
United open their campaign with the visit of Crystal Palace on September 19, but the involvement of Rojo remains a slim possibility.

Solskjaer said of the player in January: “Marcos is a lovely lad, he's got the fire in his belly, he's a winner and he wasn't getting enough football here.
“It was important for him to start playing. He wants to come back a fitter and better player, hopefully having played well for Estudiantes and helped Seba [Veron] and his club, and gone to the Copa America.
“So that was something we just had to do.”
