Mikel Arteta praised for Mesut Ozil management which shows ‘real skill’ of Arsenal boss

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been praised for his handling of Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi. Both players have been frozen out under Arteta, who has been hailed as ‘firm and decisive’ in his handling of players who don’t fit into his team ethos.

Ozil has not played for the Gunners since March amid concerns over his work rate and attitude, and was left out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad despite being one of the club’s top earners on wages of around £350,000-per-week.

And Guendouzi was sent out on loan to the Bundesliga for the season after clashing with Brighton players back in June.

The French midfielder has not played under Arteta since that incident, and the club were ready to listen to offers for him over the summer.

However, no acceptable bid came in, and the 21-year-old instead joined Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan on the final day of the transfer window.

And former England defender Micah Richards said Arteta’s handling of both players had shown the Arsenal manager’s “real skill”.

“Ozil isn’t playing for Arsenal because he won’t press the way Arteta wants him to,” wrote the ex-Man City right-back in his MailOnline column.

“If it had anything to do with ability, Ozil would be in. If a player has flair and is willing to work, you always find room for them.”

Richards said Arteta had managed the Ozil situation perfectly, with no hint of any row being leaked out or allowed to cause a distraction.

“What I love about the way Arteta has handled Ozil is that he hasn’t allowed one bit of animosity to creep out into the sport pages,” he continued.

“We don’t know whether they are locked in a feud or if there has been a row because the manager deals with everything so clinically.

“It’s a real skill, that. It’s easy for news of rifts to leave the training ground but Arteta has taken care of this so expertly.”

And he said the way Guendouzi was jettisoned from Arteta’s first-team set-up also showed the manager’s no-nonsense approach when it came to matters of discipline.

Richards wrote: “Arteta won’t stand for any messing and it is no coincidence that Guendouzi has been sent on loan to Hertha Berlin, having not kicked a ball since a game at Brighton in June.

“Guendouzi was involved in a spat with Neal Maupay and was said to have asked Brighton’s players how much they were earning.

“Whatever happened, Arteta didn’t stand for it and sent him on his way.

“It’s firm and decisive action that showed who is in charge. There is nothing soft about Arteta.”
