Newcastle 'should replace Bruce with Mourinho' claims Danny Mills

Newcastle ‘should replace Steve Bruce with Jose Mourinho’ following takeover claims Danny Mills as ‘there is no one else better’ than the ex-Man United boss

  • Newcastle are plotting major moves having been taken over by Saudi regime
  • Steve Bruce appears to be heading swiftly for the exit door in the coming days
  • Former defender Danny Mills believes Jose Mourinho is the best man for the job
  • The Portuguese manager is currently in charge at Serie A side Roma

Danny Mills has claimed ‘there is no one else better’ to replace Steve Bruce at Newcastle than former Chelsea and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Newcastle were taken over by Public Investment Fund (PIF) for £305million last week making them the wealthiest club in world football and the new owners have promised the fans they will transform the Magpies from a team battling relegation to title challengers.

As part of the revamp, a new manager is expected to be appointed as the Magpies boss Steve Bruce’s days at the club rapidly become increasingly limited.

Sportsmail reported last week that the 60-year-old would be leaving the club in light of the Saudi-led takeover, and that his pay-off stands at £8million.

The new owners aware of the negative impact his presence in the dugout in the opening game, and have lined up a list of high-profile contenders to replace him, including Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, Lucien Favre and Steven Gerrard.

But former Premier League defender Mills believes Portuguese boss Mourinho is the best candidate to guide Newcastle ‘from survival to top four’.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is also among the potential candidates to replace Bruce

‘If you’re talking about being given money to build a team and be relatively successful, I’d go with Mourinho,’ he told talkSPORT, via Metro.

‘If you give Jose enough money and allow him to what he wants to do, he will guide you to success quicker than probably anyone else.

‘Newcastle can go slowly and survive this season, next season finish in the top half, then top six. But If they want to jump from survival to top four, I don’t see anyone better out there than Mourinho to do that.

‘You’d have to give him absolute fortunes to buy the players that he wants, but he’s one of the only coaches that could do that.

‘He could put a team together next week that will be successful, he could do it in the January transfer window. The football might not be brilliant but he’ll get you winning games that’s for sure.’

Mourinho is currently in charge at Roma and the Portuguese manager’s side sit fourth in Serie A after the opening seven games and four points ahead of Juventus going into their clash at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday.

Bruce was expected to be given his marching orders during the two-week international break ahead of Sunday’s Premier League game but Newcastle’s clash with Tottenham could now be the boss’s final game in charge.
