- Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves both praised Edinson Cavani’s performance
- The striker was at the heart of United’s attacking threat in the 6-2 win over Roma
- The pundits agreed that no other attacker at the club offers what Cavani does
- United fans took to Twitter to urge the Uruguayan to extend deal at Old Trafford
Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves were full of praise for Edinson Cavani after the striker led Manchester United to a sensational 6-2 win over Roma on Thursday night.
The Uruguayan scored twice and provided the assist for another two goals as United ran riot at Old Trafford in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash with the Italian giants.
The result leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in as strong a position as they could possibly have hoped for heading into next week’s second leg, where they look set to comfortably secure a place in next month’s final in Gdansk.
Edinson Cavani was on top form to help fire Manchester United to a 6-2 victory over Roma
Owen Hargeaves hailed the striker’s all round performance and what he offers to his side
Speaking after the match, Scholes hailed the Uruguayan for his impact on the game, and the former United midfielder believes Cavani offers something that United’s other attacking options can not.
‘It was an all-round centre-forward’s performance,’ Scholes told BT Sport.
‘We’ve seen these kinds of players, Marcus (Rashford), Mason (Greenwood), (Anthony) Martial, we’re not quite sure if they’re centre-forwards.
‘Tonight, that tells you, that’s a real centre-forward out there. He led the line, he brought other players into play.
‘Two brilliant goals, what a finish the first one, top corner and he gave the ‘keeper no chance and a sniffer’s goal as well.
‘It was a brilliant all-round performance. He’ll be a little bit disappointed he didn’t get his hat-trick, really.’
Paul Scholes suggested that Cavani is the only real centre-forward United have in their squad
Hargreaves agreed with his fellow pundit in praising Cavani, who sees his current deal at the club expire at the end of the season.
‘That was a proper centre-forward’s performance,’ Hargreaves said.
‘I love Martial, I love Marcus (Rashford), but they’re more kind of the modern attackers that can play in multiple positions.
‘But Cavani, he has the experience of playing through the middle, I thought his hold-up play was brilliant.’
It was a performance that delighted United fans watching at home, but led many to immediately turn their thoughts to the striker’s future.
Many took to Twitter to urge Cavani to sign a new contract and extend his time at Old Trafford.
@SimplyUTD tweeted: ‘CAVANI SIGN THE F***ING CONTRACT.’
@mufcrey posted: ‘I might actually cry if Cavani doesn’t sign the contract.’
Another commented: ‘Get this Cavani guy sign the contract ASAP! What a player, oh what a player.’
‘Ole should lock Cavani in the dressing room and not let him out before he has extended his contract. On fire tonight,’ tweeted @WaqarT_.
