Pep Guardiola’s comments about Man City future as he enters final year of deal

Pep Guardiola is determined to see out his contract at Manchester City.

The Spaniard watched his side spurn a golden chance to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Lyon on Saturday, and has since been criticised.

The 49-year-old has now failed to win the tournament in three seasons at Bayern Munich and four seasons at the Etihad.

Although he has issued his desire to see out his contract, which runs until the end of next season, the vacant Barcelona job could tempt Guardiola to return home.

Speaking about his future on January 17…

Guardiola said: "I’m staying unless they sack me – 100 per cent, unless they don’t like it.

"I’ve said it many times. Not because we won the last two games. I’m sorry, I’m going to stay.

"I enjoy working with them, I like it. But even if it was going bad I’m not going anywhere.

"No manager wins all the time, we’ve lost some games so what can we do to get better, it’s simple."

Speaking after City's 2-0 win over West Ham in February…

Guardiola said: "It’s not finished. The club believes it’s unfair [the European ban] so we are going to appeal. We are going to wait.

"All we can do is on the pitch and do what we have done the last four years and focus on that until the end of the season. I trust 100 per cent completely my club what they have done. They explained to me the reasons why.

"We are going to fight like we have fought every single game and day we are together until the end of the season. We are optimistic that at the end the truth will prevail and next season we will be in the Champions League.

"If they don’t sack me I will stay here 100% more than ever. First because I want to stay. It’s something special, more than the contract I have. I said before, I say now I want to stay and help the club and maintain this level as long as possible."

Speaking in a press conference on July 4…

Guardiola said: “With CAS, we are ready – and I have a lot of confidence and trust in people that we will be allowed in the Champions League next year.

“Of course we want to be there and on 13 July we will know the resolution.

“All the workers here, the players, the staff, the whole club can continue growing over the next few years.”
