Premier League urged to ‘pull the plug’ on season and not give Liverpool the title
The Premier League and other leagues affected by the coronavirus pandemic should all cancel their current seasons, according to former England and Newcastle winger Chris Waddle. The Dutch Eredivisie became the first major league to declare their season over earlier this week, with no champions or relegation. The French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 have also been cancelled but it is not yet known whether there will be league winners, promotion or relegation.
Waddle thinks the best solution for any league would be to declare seasons null and void, even if that means runaway leaders such as Liverpool miss out on almost certain title success.
The pundit thinks it would set a bad precedent to award Liverpool the title because other factors such as relegation and Champions League qualification spots will then have to be decided.
Waddle says it is an extraordinary season and one that should be left behind, allowing the next campaign to start on time in August.
“Me personally I think we should pull the plugs on all the leagues and start again in August,” Waddle said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“The Dutch have said ‘Yeah, we’ll finish the league’, the French have said they’re finishing the league, this is where the trouble starts now.
“I just think it’s an unbelievable season and nobody ever thought it was coming.
“Me personally, I think all the leagues should be like Holland and say ‘we’re stopping it’.
“You can’t expect players to be playing a full June and then what are we going to do? Put the next season back a month?

“What if it’s not available in June? What if this is still around? People don’t want to play behind closed doors.
“It’s become farcical and I respect what Holland and the French have done, I think that’s the way forward.
“Unfortunately people are going to say ‘they should have won it’ – yes Liverpool would have easily won the league and I’m not saying they shouldn’t.

“But if you start saying to Liverpool ‘there’s the trophy’, which everyone thinks is right and I’m not arguing that, but then you say ‘well, who’s going to get relegated? Who’s going to get the Champions League places?’.
“There’s too much at stake and too many arguments are going to start, teams want to get promoted.
“Unfortunately, we’ve got to put it down to circumstances and say ‘I’m sorry, this is just a one-off, hopefully, and it never happened this season.”
