Frank Lampard would be “less of a risk” for Rangers than Steven Gerrard was, claims former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan. Gerrard officially left Rangers on Thursday morning to become the next head coach of Aston Villa. The Liverpool legend left after three-and-half years at Ibrox.

Gerrard ended Rangers’ 10-year wait for a Scottish Premiership title last season, preventing Celtic from winning 10 in a row and doing it in style by going the entire league campaign unbeaten.

The former England captain had not managed a first-team before he was appointed in 2018.

Lampard has been linked with the vacancy, along with former Gers star Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Jordan believes Lampard’s coaching background – where he has managed Derby County and Chelsea – makes him less risky than Gerrard’s appointment was.

And he reckons he would be a better fit than Van Bronckhorst.

“I do [think Lampard would be good],” Jordan said on talkSPORT.

“On one hand, part of me thinks Frank shouldn’t be following a peer into a job, but that’s not how football works.

“I think from a stardust point of view and from a capability point of view, Lampard goes there.

“I can understand the argument for Giovani van Bronckhorst because he’s played there.

“I’m not sure where he is in the food chain of managing a football club and understanding what is going on up at Rangers at this moment in time.

“I think Lampard kind of shoes in, kind of follows the blueprint that they took with Gerrard.

“In fact he’s probably less of a risk than they took with Gerrard because he’s already done some managerial work, he’s already been at a certain level, and he already understands the iconography because he did it at Chelsea for 18 months.”

Jordan reckons managing Rangers would be a huge opportunity for Lampard and believes he could have similar success to Gerrard.

“Frank Lampard going into Rangers would fit the dynamics of the recognisability of Lampard,” he added.

“Rangers don’t need recognisability around the world, they need to win the SPFL again and they need to qualify for the Champions League group stages from the get go.

“I think Lampard fits into the profile. The players would respond to him, it’s a similar outlook on the game.

“I know there was this big argument that those two could never play in the same team. Maybe they can manage the same team at different times.”
