Manchester United stars are said to see Raphael Varane as a role model within their squad despite him only joining the club as recently as August.

The World Cup and Champions League winning defender with France and Real Madrid is set to play a key role alongside Harry Maguire at the back while creating a base for their creative colleagues.

While many have chosen to wait before judging just how impressive the signing of Varane will be for United, the early signs are all good ones following the 1-0 win over Wolves.

With Newcastle up next on Saturday, and all eyes on Cristiano Ronaldo, Varane is ready to put in another solid performance – and that is what his team-mates are expecting.

The Sun report that Varane is proving a 'big hit' among members of the playing squad having formed an early partnership with Maguire in the heart of their defence.

They quote a source as saying: “He’s settled in so well to the club and the squad — the other defenders already look up to him.

“What he’s done in his career is impossible to ignore. He has won a World Cup and four Champions Leagues."

Adding: “He’s only played one game, but it feels more secure and confident with him around.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after their win over Wolves before the international break: “This was 'welcome to the Premier League' – tempo, hustle bustle, tackle, have to defend counter attacks.

"Top, top performance. He’s good in the air, he’s so composed on the ball and he’s so experienced and nothing phases him."

Adding: "He was good in the dressing room before the game, half-time and so I’m delighted with his performance. I thought he showed his class."

David de Gea also offered up some words about his new team-mate, and they were all positive.

He said: “He was very good, we kept a clean sheet so it’s always very good to start with a clean sheet.

“He’s a great lad, I think he’s good for the group. Very experienced centre back.

"Many, many games and I think he showed today he's calm with the ball, he's good in the air, he’s very quick, so a great defender – a great signing for us."
