Real Madrid avoided another Champions League scare by beating Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League clash on Wednesday night. Serhiy Kryvtsov put the ball into his own net to give Los Blancos the lead. And Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Karim Benzema were also on target to secure all three points.

Real Madrid have had a mixed Champions League campaign so far.

They battled their way to a 1-0 win over Inter Milan on matchday one, with Rodrygo scoring the winner.

But they lost 1-0 last time out to Sheriff, who caused a major upset in front of supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Against Shakhtar on Tuesday night, fans could have been forgiven for wondering what team would turn up.

But Carlo Ancelotti’s side were a class above, with Vini Jr the star of the show in Ukraine by scoring twice.

Express Sport will now take a look at four things we learned from the match.

Real are creating a new Ronaldo

When Ancelotti took charge back in the summer, he was told to coax the best from Vinicius Jr.

And he certainly appears to be doing that, with the Brazil international really beginning to come of age.

Vinicius scored Real’s second goal of the night with a deft lob after a sublime pass from the mercurial Luka Modric.

And he then notched his second five minutes later, taking his tally to seven for the campaign in the Champions League and La Liga combined.

The last time Real had a winger this potent, it was Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, Vinicius is following in his footsteps by rising to the fore on a big Champions League night.

Modric and Kroos stay gold

Modric and Toni Kroos are both entering the twilight years of their respective careers.

But their partnership remains one of the very best in world football.

Both players were at their slick, stylish best on Tuesday night by pulling the strings in the middle of the park.

It was a performance reminiscent of the duo at their peaks, when they helped the club win three Champions League titles on the spin.

If they can stay like this for the rest of the campaign, Real may just add another European trophy to their cabinet.

Karim Benzema is this team’s talisman

While Kroos, Modric and Vinicius all sparkled, so too did Karim Benzema.

He was involved in their first goal of the night, applying the pressure on Kryvtsov as he put the ball into his own net.

And it’s evident that he’s the beating heart of this team, something the finale proved as he got himself on the scoresheet.

Benzene has evolved to a new level since the departure of Ronaldo three years ago.

And if Real are to win the Champions League again, the France international will be key to those hopes.

Shakhtar now all but out

The result means that Shakhtar, after three games, are all but out of the competition.

Inter Milan beating Sheriff means both they and Real are now on course to qualify for the knpckput stages.

And Shakhtar may now struggle to get into the Europa League.

It’s been a disappointing European campaign for the Ukrainian team so far.

And whether they’re able to rally and salvage something, with just a point to their name, remains to be seen.
