Rio Ferdinand explains how Serge Gnabry went from Arsenal flop to world star

Rio Ferdinand ’s insists Serge Gnabry’s change in fortunes from being an Arsenal flop to a Champions League winner is all down his hard work.

Gnabry helped Bayern Munich to their six European Cup win on Sunday night after a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon.

The victory marked a sensational rise to the top of the game for the German, who is now regarded as one of the most lethal wingers in Europe.

Gnabry was highly rated as a youngster coming through at Arsenal but failed to make the grade and was even loaned out to West Bromwich Albion.

But after opting against the chance to remain at the Emirates to return this homeland, he joined Werder Bremen for £5million in 2016.

It was there that he really began to find his feet before then going on to sign for Bayern.

And it was during his time at Bremen where former Manchester United captain Ferdinand had a chance encounter with Gnabry while on holiday in Dubai.

Gnabry stopped for a chat with him and explained how he was low on confidence after his time at Arsenal but was ready to step things up.

“I was on a beach in Dubai just chilling, just watching the day go by and he came along with Hector Bellerin,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“We just had a chat, sitting on the sun lounger, and he was really down. He’d lost confidence and was starting to just rebuild his career and try to build himself back up.

“He’d just gone to Germany and he was saying it was hard work he was just going to get on, get his head down and here we are today.

“It just shows that if you keep chipping away as a young payer, you get a chance, you’re going to get knock backs but it’s how you react to that.

“He’s reacted in the best way possible. Applied himself right and he’s got his rewards. A great young lad.”

Gnabry has now won two Bundesliga titles, two German Cups and the Champions League during his two years at Bayern.

And at just 25 years old, there is much more to come from the player that was mocked after failing to get a game for West Brom.
