Ronaldo has avoided three red cards this season after latest escape at Newcastle

Cristiano Ronaldo has avoided three red cards in the Premier League this season with his latest escape coming in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Monday evening.

Having been second-best throughout the contest, the Red Devils had to rely on substitute Edinson Cavani to salvage a point at St. James' Park after Allan Saint-Maximin had given the hosts the lead in the seventh minute.

Star man Cristiano Ronaldo was visibly frustrated with their latest performance, heading straight down the tunnel on the full-time whistle.

But the five-time Ballon d'Or winner could – and possibly should – have left the field much earlier.

Ronaldo received a yellow card for his rash challenge on Ryan Fraser midway through the second half but on another day the former Real Madrid man could have easily seen red.

Clearly angered by United's poor performance, Ronaldo raced into a challenge in front of the dugout with his foot wildly swinging for the high ball before clattering Fraser with the follow-through.

And it's not the first time the £12.5m summer signing has avoided an early bath this season.

The Portuguese legend was involved in a similar altercation against Liverpool when United suffered a 5-0 hammering to their bitter rivals.

With the ball trapped underneath Curtis Jones on the by-line, Ronaldo claimed obstruction while aggressively kicking the Reds midfielder but once again the referee only brandished a yellow card.

Though contentious refereeing decisions concerning Ronaldo aren't just extended to domestic football.

Whilst playing for Portugal, in September, A Selecao's captain was once again the centre of attention, and it could have prevented him from breaking the international goalscoring record.

Despite topping Ali Daei's long-standing honour by netting his 110th goal, Ronaldo hit out at Ireland's Dara O'Shea when preparing to take a spot-kick.

With fellow Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes having won the penalty, Ronaldo naturally was on duty from 12 yards.

But the Portugal captain seemed to let emotions get the better of him when O'Shea kicked the ball off the spot and struck out at the Ireland defender punching him on the arm.

Ronaldo though did not even see a yellow card for the obvious assault and was only booked for the removal of his shirt after netting the winning goal in the 96th-minute.
