Ronaldo’s former teammate explains why superstar ‘is not a normal person’
Cristiano Ronaldo's reputation for having a boundless work ethic has been cemented even further by claims made by former Juventus centre-back Medhi Benatia.
The defender, who now plays for Qatar club Al-Duhail SC, recalled a time at Juve when the 'not normal' Ronaldo messaged him after an encounter against Atalanta and asked if he wanted to join the attacker in a gym session.
Speaking to radio station RMC, Medhi Benatia said: “For the game against Atalanta we were the two unused substitutes because three days later we were going to play again and the coach wanted to make rotations.”
“When we were on the bus back, Cristiano Ronaldo sent me a message: ‘What are you going to do now?’ I told him: ‘It’s 11 PM. I’m going home. Why?'"
The Moroccan then received a message from the Portugal international saying that he hardly got a run-in during the game and was still bursting with energy so wanted to have a work-out.
Benatia continued: "At that moment I realised that Cristiano is not a normal person. When you work with him, you respect him more because you see that he sacrificed his whole life for football.”
Ronaldo, like the rest of his Juve teammates, is currently in self-isolation amid the coronavirus pandemic which has ransacked Italy particularly hard.
