Under-pressure Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been told to make a surprising player the first name on his team-sheet.

The Red Devils have won just three of their last eight games, with many questioning if Solskjaer is the right man to lead them back to the top of the Premier League.

The season had started with high expectations for Solskjaer and United, following a summer transfer window that saw Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo all arrive at Old Trafford.

But Solskjaer’s reign is quickly spiralling, with title contenders Liverpool their next opponents in a game in which it is hard to see where United can claim any points.

It would be expected that the key to turning around United’s form would lie in getting the best out of Ronaldo.

But former Arsenal star Paul Merson thinks that rather than any of their big-money signings, academy graduate Scott McTominay should be the first name on the United team-sheet.

Merson believes that McTominay can bring some much-needed workrate to a United side that have been criticised for their unwillingness to close opponents down.

“They've got to change it up a bit. They don't close people down either. Look at Liverpool. They are flying again because they've started working hard again,” Merson wrote in his Daily Star column.

“Look at Manchester City. Top players. Top team. Working their socks off. Look at Chelsea the other day against Brentford. Up against it. But they'd run through brick walls for you.

“United? They're not closing down. They're not working hard. They're EASY to play against. They're struggling. It's not nice to watch Manchester United at the moment.

“How they beat Liverpool I have no idea. But Scott McTominay is the first name on the teamsheet. At least he puts a shift in.

“United don't have enough players like that. And Solskjaer won't be in a job much longer if it carries on like this.”

McTominay has made eight appearances in all competitions so far this season, with United losing just twice when he plays.
