Sheriff Tiraspol score late screamer to incredibly beat Real Madrid at Bernabeu

Sheriff Tiraspol scored a stoppage time winner to secure one of the Champions League's greatest ever shocks as they beat Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The tournament debutants had taken the lead in the 25th minute when Jasurbek Yakhshidoev headed past Thibaut Courtois against the run of play.

The 13-time winners then drew level shortly after the hour-mark through a Karim Benzema penalty after a length VAR check penalised the visitors.

However, a second win from two matches was snatched by the Moldovan champions when Sebastien Thill lashed a half-volley into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Sheriff, who reside in the unrecognised state of Transnistria, previously won their opening match at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Brazilian left-back Cristiano was able to pick out Yakhshiboev with a pinpoint cross and the Uzbek international headed in off the right-hand post.

Yakhshiboev could not quite believe it as he wheeled away to celebrate, stopping before knee-sliding and putting his head in his hands as his teammates ran to mob him.

Los Blancos pulled themselves level as Benzema slotted home his 72nd Champions League goal from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.

However, Thill's 92nd minute winner shocked Carlo Ancelotti's side and gives Sheriff a three-point cushion at the top of group D.

The Luxembourg midfielder calmly controlled a loose ball on the edge of the box before striking it cleanly on the half volley into the top corner with Courtois helpless.

The magnitude of the result can be seen in the fact that Sheriff's total budget is less than the weekly wages of Real Madrid's Belgian winger Eden Hazard.

On top of this, Sheriff began their campaign in the first qualifying round against KF Teuta Durres of Albania and come from the poorest country in Europe.

They now go into back to back matches with Italian champions Inter Milan in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages in what would be another first for the club.
