Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is turning his attention to Juventus ace Douglas Costa with a deal for Jadon Sancho hitting the wall.
The Norwegian boss had made the Borussia Dortmund winger his priority target during the window but a transfer is looking increasingly unlikely.
With Dortmund demanding well over £100m for his signature and United refusing to pay more than £80m talks are said to have broken down.
United missed a previous deadline set by Dortmund to complete a transfer before Sancho was due back in training and it now seems a deal in January or next summer could now be more realistic.
Reports in Italy claim Solskjaer is now pressing ahead with a deal for Costa.
Gazetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, state Solskjaer is pushing for the Brazilian’s signature and he is ‘ready to give him a starting shirt in a fantasy attack’.
United have been keeping tabs on the 29-year-old for some time but have not yet made a bid over concerns for his injury record.
The Brazil international has suffered 18 different injuries during his career – including a calf issue that ruled him out for four months.
Costa would prove a much cheaper alternative to Sancho though with his time looking up in Turin.

New boss Andrea Pirlo has been told he needs to sell players in order to raise funds for new faces through the door and with Costa’s contract expiring in 2022 he could be one player put up for sale.
ESPN pundit and former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson reckons Costa should be handed a fresh chance to prove himself at United.
Speaking on ESPN, he said: ”If you’re looking for a right-sided player that can come in on to his left foot and get crosses in and get shots away and link up with the front player, he’s an excellent player.
"He hasn’t really done anywhere near as well at Juventus as people thought he would. He’s had his injury problems, he’s had his disciplinary problems, he got sent off earlier on in the season.
"But on his day he’s still an excellent player and I don’t think he’s been given the opportunities that he would have hoped for.
"When he was at Bayern Munich he was a magnificent player and I think if he went to Manchester United, he could rediscover that form.
"So I think he would be a good alternative."
