Southampton ‘left frustrated’ over transfer talks for Arsenal’s Maitland-Niles
Ainsley Maitland-Niles could remain at Arsenal beyond the transfer deadline.
The versatile 23-year-old has played both at wing-back, right back and in central midfield under Mikel Arteta, but has not featured in any of their last three domestic outings.
With Maitland-Niles keen to be playing regular football, he has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs including Southampton, Leicester and West Brom.
However, it now appears as though one of those clubs has withdrawn from the race as the deadline fast approaches – but not because of Gunners chiefs.
BBC Radio Solent have reported that Southampton have ended their interest having become ‘increasingly frustrated’ in negotiations with the player’s representatives.
They add that the Saints have now moved on to pursue other targets before the transfer deadline at 11pm on Monday evening for Premier League clubs.
When asked about the futures of Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock, and Reiss Nelson earlier in the day, Arteta stated that all the relevant decisions have already been made.
He said: “Yes, we have decided, and we are working on it.
“So, you will find out before 11.
“I cannot speak about any individual players, about what we want to do, the conversations we’ve had, so let’s see if we can get something done tonight.”
When asked about any potential arrivals, the Spaniard added: “Well, the last day of the transfer window is always unpredictable.
“Things can happen, they might happen, they might not happen … we are on it.”
Next up for Arsenal is a trip to Wolves on Tuesday and Aston Villa on Saturday.
