Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho dealt international injury blow which may force late transfer

Tottenham star Eric Dier is reportedly a doubt for the game against West Ham at the weekend after picking up an injury on international duty with England which may further push the club to complete a move for Joe Rodon. Spurs made some big moves in the transfer window strengthening Jose Mourinho’s squad across a number of positions.

Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty have come in to improve Tottenham’s options at full-back while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has added some steel to their midfield.

Gareth Bale’s shock return to north London on loan helps create a fearful attacking line-up alongside Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

And Tottenham finally brought in a back-up striker in the shape of Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica.

The only thing missing from their summer transfer window recruitment was a replacement for Jan Vertonghen.

Milan Skriniar was their top target, but they were ultimately priced out of making a move.

Mourinho has shifted Dier into centre-back since taking over from Mauricio Pochettino and he’s largely impressed at the back.

He’s been the main option alongside Davinson Sanchez with Toby Alderweireld playing back-up.

But Mourinho may be forced into making a big change at the weekend with Dier reportedly picking up a hamstring injury while training with England.

The 26-year-old withdrew from the squad to face Denmark on Wednesday night and Football London claim he is a doubt to play on Sunday.

Dier’s injury highlights Tottenham’s need for another defensive recruit before the domestic window shuts on Friday and could well push them to completing a move for Rodon.

Tottenham have been in talks with Swansea over a £15m move for the Wales international this week.

And former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes a deal will go through by Friday.

“That transfer tells you a lot about Eric Dier, the fact that they are looking for another centre half,” he told Football Insider.

“It is a position that they have needed to strengthen in for a while.

“Joe Rodon has been touted for a move to Spurs and I think that is a move that will get pushed over the line before the deadline.

“He is on international duty this week but I am confident that Joe Rodon will be a Spurs player by Friday.”
