Napoli forward and reported Tottenham target Victor Osimhen has named Cristian Romero as the toughest defender he has faced during his career in a welcome boost to the north London club’s hopes of snapping him up in the summer. Antonio Conte is said to have identified Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille two years ago, as a priority target to shore up his attacking ranks ahead of next season.

Tottenham endured a difficult time of things in the January transfer window after missing out on a number of key signings over the course of last month.

The likes of Adama Traore and Luis Diaz were heavily targeted by director of football Fabio Paratici before eventually deciding to join Barcelona and Liverpool respectively.

Spurs ultimately managed to complete deadline-day moves for Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur to steer clear of a fruitless mid-season recruitment drive at the eleventh hour.

Conte is also thought to be keen on adding plenty of new blood to his squad in the summer and it seems as though Osimhen could soon emerge as one of the 52-year-old’s main targets.

The Napoli man has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham since the end of last season and is said to be firmly on the club’s radar ahead of the summer window.

He has already spoken of his admiration for potential future team-mate Romero, who joined Spurs in pre-season on an initial loan move from Atalanta.

“Romero, who is now at Tottenham,” Osimhen told Football Italia when quizzed on the toughest opponent he has played against over the course of his career.

“He was always faster than me every time we faced each other. The other one is Kalidou Koulibaly, he never let me score in training.”

It remains to be seen whether Osimhen will eventually link up with Romero at Tottenham if Conte and Paratici decide to launch a move for his services at the end of the season.

He has been leading the charge in attack for Napoli as of late, scoring nine goals and chipping in with a pair of assists since the beginning of the campaign.

Reports have claimed that Osimhen could be sold for a fee in the region of £70million, a price tag that would see him surpass Tanguy Ndombele as Tottenham’s record signing if he ends up joining the club later this year.

ESPN pundit Gabriele Marcotti recently tipped the forward to emerge as one of the game’s most feared strikers alongside the likes of Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski over the next few seasons.

“What I’ll tell you about Osimhen, the best is yet to come and it’s coming,” explained Marcotti back in September.

“You know the holy pentagram of great centre-forwards that we all talk about. Karim Benzema, [Robert] Lewandowski, Harry Kane, [Romelu] Lukaku and, who am I missing, Erling Haaland.

“Guess what, it’s going to be six soon. Osimhen is on his way.”

Osimhen has racked up a total of 20 goals for Napoli since joining the club in 2020 and was recently named in the Nigeria squad for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

He scored five times in six matches to help the Super Eagles book their place at the tournament but was restricted to just one finals appearance prior to their second-round exit at the hands of Tunisia.
