Tottenham have been warned that Antonio Conte would consider a sensational summer switch to Manchester United if Spurs fail to match his ambitions. The north Londoners were comfortably knocked out of the EFL Cup semi-final by Chelsea in a tie that showed Conte has a huge rebuilding task ahead.

Chelsea reached the final thanks to a comfortable 3-0 aggregate victory over Spurs.

Conte’s side already had a huge job turning around a 2-0 first-leg disadvantage and were ultimately beaten at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday thanks to Antonio Rudiger’s goal.

Spurs were poor across both legs. Wednesday’s defeat followed an underwhelming performance against League One side Morecambe in the FA Cup.

Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo in November following a disastrous spell under the Portuguese.

And the club’s hierarchy are expected to spend big to help Conte rebuild the first team, despite the £60million that was used on several signings during the summer.

Several players have been linked with Spurs but no business has been completed so far.

Wing-backs, centre-backs and forwards have been targeted, with Conte revealing on Tuesday that he wants at least two players for every position.

But chairman Daniel Levy has been warned that Conte could walk out if he is not provided with support in the transfer window.

Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara believes Conte would consider a move to United in the summer if the Red Devils want the Italian to replace Ralf Rangnick.

“I look at Antonio Conte and I haven’t seen his interviews from after the Chelsea game, but he looks defeated,” the former Spurs man told talkSPORT.

“We even said watching the game that he doesn’t look the same on the side as he did when he first joined.

“He’s lost that sort of – I wouldn’t say interest, but he has lost the passion a little bit. He’s looking at the side and wondering: ‘what chance have I got?’

“He’s having to play Doherty at left wing-back again.”

O’Hara added: “The players that we (Spurs) have got, that we’re possessing, Emerson Royal and Bryan Gill – signed this season, not good enough.

“Daniel Levy, if he doesn’t buy some top quality players then Antonio Conte will walk. He will walk, I’m telling you.

“If Manchester United phoned him tomorrow and said: ‘we want you’, he would seriously think about leaving.”
