The European champions are looking to reach a compensation agreement with Lyon first as they are unable to recall Emerson Palmieri due to a clause in their deal which allowed the French side an option to permanently sign the Italy international at the end of the season.

Cash-strapped Lyon were reluctant to take up the option at the end of the season but would need to find a quality replacement of their own and have been offered Layvin Kurzawa from Paris St Germain.

The England U-21 striker is due in Middlesbrough this week to complete a short-term loan switch once he comes out of Covid isolation, becoming Middlesbrough’s second signing of the window.

Sportsmail understands, the two clubs have reached an agreement over terms of the straight loan deal including the Championship side agreeing to cover a portion of Balogun’s wages.

Spurs are reportedly willing to listen to offers for the Dutchman this month and a return to his homeland could be on the cards.

Eredivisie giants Ajax have held a strong interest in signing Bergwijn ever since being alerted that he would be sold by Spurs.

Nevertheless, the Gunners have not been put off by the huge financial outlay and are working to seal a deal to sign a player recognised as one of the best emerging talents in European football.

Sportsmail has learned the Gunners have been quoted a minimum £58million transfer fee for the Serbia international, while Vlahovic is will command £160,000-per-week after tax in wages over a five year contract – which equates to just over £300,000-per-week.

France Under 20 international Hugo Ekitike has been identified by Newcastle scouts as one of the best up and coming forwards in Europe after a breakout season where he has scored eight goals in 18 games.

Ekitike is 6ft 2ins tall, quick, skilful, can play at centre forward or on the wing. He has been likened in style to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford but prefers to do more work in the box, is still very much developing and is viewed as one that will get stronger.
