Transfer rumour rater with Rice move hinging on Lampard, Liverpool keen on Ramos
The January transfer window is well truly open and moves are being made.
Arsenal are set to make their first signing with teenage defender Omar Rekik joining from Hertha Berlin, while Mesut Ozil appears to be edging ever closer to the exit door.
Chelsea are expected to offload players as they continue to be linked with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, Liverpool need a centre-half but also face a battle to keep Gini Wijnaldum from leaving at the end of his contract.
Manchester United are another team who could do signing an experienced defender – but look set to continue building for the future by signing talented young players.
Here, Daily Star Sport rates and slates the biggest transfer rumours.
Rumours we rate
Rice move hinges on Lampard staying
Chelsea’s interest in West Ham star Declan Rice is likely to end if Frank Lampard loses his job at Stamford Bridge, according to reports.
Lampard is said to have identified Rice as a top target in the previous transfer window, only for West Ham’s £80million asking price to prove too steep amid their £220million spending spree.
Lampard is understood to be the driving force behind Chelsea’s interest in signing Rice.
And according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Rice’s potential switch across London is dependent on Lampard keeping his job.
Daily Star says: 7/10 – Rice came through at Chelsea when Lampard was in his heyday, and for him to personally target him, it seems extremely believable.
Man Utd trio set for Newcastle move
Newcastle manager Steve Bruce is believed to be eyeing up an attack on Manchester United’s fringe players in order to help propel his side up the table.
According to 90min, Brandon Williams, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard are all on Bruce’s watchlist after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season.
Williams and Lingard have been linked with loan moves away from the club, while Jones is understood to be on the permanent chopping block.
Bruce is hoping that his ties with the club will help get a deal over the line, at least for Jones, with United still unsure on the short term futures of Williams and Lingard.
Daily Star says: 6/10 – A move for the fit-again Jones seems a definite possibility, with Bruce known to be a fan of the defender, and it will be a major coup if he pulls off all three deals.
Rumours we don’t rate
Barca to buy MLS franchise to keep Messi
Barcelona are reportedly willing to acquire an MLS franchise in order to keep Lionel Messi in their global family.
According to AS, presidential candidate Xavi Vilajoana wants to expand into the US, which will offer Messi the chance to stay on their books, and is even willing to resign Luis Suárez to reunite the attacking duo at the MLS club.
Barca have attempted to undertake a similar project in 2008, but failed, with negotiations falling through.
Could the threat of losing Messi be enough to get a deal over the line this time?
Daily Star says: 2/10 – Barcelona have been hit harder than most top clubs by the coronavirus pandemic financially, and this seems like a real long shot, no matter how bad losing Messi will be to their brand.
Liverpool eye Ramos on free transfer
Liverpool are said to be eyeing a move for Sergio Ramos on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Reds are looking to bolster their backline after injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, but Jurgen Klopp is happy to wait until the summer to secure his preferred signing.
Real Madrid have ran into problems with club captain Ramos over a new contract, with the 34-year-old reportedly rejecting a one-year deal as he believes he deserves a longer term contract.
So according to El Chiringuito, Liverpool are interested in the Spain international and are prepared to offer him the terms he desires.
Daily Star says: 3/10 – This move would come as a huge shock, especially given the manner in which he helped to beat Liverpool in the Champions League in 2018. It doesn’t exactly scream forward thinking Klopp.
