What Thiago Alcantara must prove to Jurgen Klopp during Liverpool vs Arsenal

Thiago Alcantara is primed for his full Liverpool debut, with the Spaniard in line to start vs Arsenal on Monday night.

After his £25million transfer was completed last week, Thiago made his Premier League bow in the 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

But with Jordan Henderson injured for the visit of the Gunners, the former Bayern Munich man is likely to be given the nod from the off.

Asked if he will start his new signing, Jurgen Klopp said: "We will see, we will see.

“We have a few days to train, some boys have to recover from last night, so we will see how we set up against Arsenal.

"I have an idea, but why should I make the decision today when we have time until Monday? But he is in contention, for sure. Yeah, let's see."

With that in mind, ahead of his Anfield debut, we’ve taken a look at what Klopp will be looking for from his new midfielder:

Against Chelsea, Thiago broke a record of sorts. Completing 75 passes in just 45 second-half minutes.

That was more than any other player from either side, despite only coming on at half-time.

Klopp will be keen to see Thiago run the game from deep, with his passing controlling the tempo and dictating the play.

Both sides will look to dominate possession, but the signing of Thiago gives Liverpool the edge over most teams in Europe.

If you were to pick a fault in his supreme performance in west Lodnon, it would be his defensive work.

Thiago clumsily gave the hosts a route back into the game, giving away a penalty, only for Alisson to save.

Klopp admitted following the game that he would need to adapt to his new team’s way of defending.

But after a full week on the training pitches at Melwood, Klopp will be hoping to see that adaptation take shape.

Thiago will likely be tasked with keeping tabs on compatriot Dani Ceballos. The Real Madrid loanee will be the most pogressive of Arsenal’s midfield players, with Granit Xhaka likely to sit deeper.

A key part of the game could come down to which Spaniard wins the midfield battle.

The Liverpool skipper will miss the game with a thigh injury. Last season, when Henderson was absent, their performances did dip below their extraordinarily high standards.

The acquisition of Thiago means Liverpool shouldn’t miss a beat and Klopp will want to see Thiago set an example in midfield and become a leader on the pitch.
