Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni reveals who he blames for Kolkata IPL defeat

MS Dhoni says Chennai Super Kings’ batsmen ‘let the bowlers down’ after their defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

IPL 2019 runners-up Chennai suffered a 10-run defeat to Kolkata in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday to slip to fifth in the table.

The Super Kings impressed with the ball, restricting Kolkata to 167 with Dwayne Bravo, Karn Sharma, Shardul Thakur and Sam Curran all taking two wickets.

But Chennai lost regular wickets during their chase and fell 10 runs short despite opener Shane Watson scoring 50 and Ravindra Jadeja smashing 21 off eight balls.

India legend Dhoni said: ‘In the middle overs, there was a phase when KKR bowled two or three good overs. Then we lost wickets.

‘If our batting was different during that period, the result would have been different. The bowlers did well to restrict them down to 167, but the batsmen let them down.

‘You have to be slightly innovate in these scenarios. If someone is bowling just back of a length, you have to find a way to hit boundaries.’

Indian batsman Rahul Tripathi was awarded the Man of the Match award after his 51-ball 81 set the platform for Kolkata’s victory.

He said: ‘It is a dream come true for me. I was prepared for both roles. Wherever you get the opportunity to bat, you have to be prepared.

‘I just thought the ball was coming on nicely so I kept trying to score runs. I have loved this journey, coming to KKR is special.’
