Exciting three-year-old Cambourne poised to give training team their first Group 1
Exciting colt Cambourne may have missed a place on Saturday but turned in one of the runs of the day at Caulfield and his trainers insist he is the right sort of type to give the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas a serious shake.
Cambourne has come a long way in a short time with wins at Donald and Bendigo earlier this month leading up to his flashing lights run in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on Saturday.
The winner Crosshaven was impressive but it was impossible not to be taken by Cambourne who steamed home from second last to finish fourth and only two lengths off the winner in a race where the backmarkers had little chance.

The training team of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr were excited by the run and the colt should lap up the extra 200m of the Caulfield Guineas where he is now a $13 chance for the Group 1 on October 10.
They know he will in some ways have to be the party pooper – there are some big names ahead of him in the Guineas betting market such as Mo‘unga, Ole Kirk, Glenfiddich and King’s Legacy.
But Kent Jr says the colt can continue his rapid-fire development and make a big Group 1 splash.
Price and Kent Jr launched their training partnership together in March last year and Cambourne shapes as a promising chance to win their first Group 1 together.
“It was a day on Saturday where it wasn’t easy to make ground and this horse was sensational making up such fantastic ground with some fairly easy riding,” Kent Jr said.
“We never initially considered he would be a top echelon colt but we have really been taken aback by his development.
“When the jockey presses the button on him, he is a very smart horse.
“After his runs he walks around like an old gelding and if any horse can do it, he can do it.
“He looks most exciting and that really was a good trial for the (Caulfield) Guineas.”

After his run on Saturday, bookies slashed Cambourne’s odds for the Group 1 Victoria Derby from $51 to $18.
Kent Jr indicated any thought of a Derby mission was “crystal ball stuff’’ but said the son of Redoute’s Choice and Dyna Slam had enough pedigree on his mum’s side to suggest he would get out over more ground.

The training team is also likely to have National Choice, who turned in a vastly improved performance to finish third after leading the Prelude, in the Caulfield Guineas.
They could also have Captain Corelli (fourth in the Prelude) if he gets into the field.
In terms of the Group 1 Thousand Guineas, Kent Jr said Night Raid would have to be ridden more conservatively in the big dance than she was in the Thousand Prelude (when finishing fourth) to be a chance against the big guns at 1600m.
Night Raid is an $11 chance in the Thousand Guineas, as is stablemate Odeum who is waiting in the wings after being an impressive winner of a Listed race at Caulfield on September 19.
