Godolphin filly Frost Flowers out to press Blue Diamond claims in Preview at Caulfield
Frost Flowers sits high in Blue Diamond Stakes betting but the Godolphin filly will need to step up another level in Tuesday’s Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield.
Frost Flowers is a $9 equal second favourite in Blue Diamond Stakes markets after her dominant debut win down the Flemington straight on New Year’s Day.
The youngster will have her first stakes run in Tuesday’s $160,000 race. Co-trainer Sam Freedman said Frost Flowers has held her condition well in the 25 days since her impressive debut.
“I think the gap between runs really suits her because there’s not very much of her,” Freedman, who co-trains Frost Flowers in partnership with his father Anthony, said.
“She’s fit and forward and holding her condition well.
“It’s hard with two-year-olds because they’re here one minute and not the next but she’s showing traits that she should keep progressing towards the Blue Diamond.”
Frost Flower’s half-brother Hanseatic was narrowly beaten in last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes after winning the colt’s divisions of both the Blue Diamond Preview and Prelude.
Freedman said the team’s strong two-year-old results showed the value of the stable’s process of only identifying the most likely types to stand up during the tough Blue Diamond series.

The rest of the stable’s annual two-year-old crop are given more time to mature.
“We’re not ones to keep throwing at the stumps hoping they’ll turn it on,” Freedman said. “They’ll either keep going or they’ll flounder.
“We put through about 50 (two-year-olds) each season and we earmark maybe 10 that we say, ‘let’s find out if they’ll do it at the right time’.
“We’re not ones to get them ready before Christmas because you’re in no man’s land and if they’re good enough, they’ll do it at this time of the year anyway.”
Frost Flowers is the $2.90 favourite to win Tuesday’s Blue Diamond Preview. But Freedman was wary of the $3.90 second pick, the Grahame Begg-trained Dosh.
“Grahame Begg’s two-year-old has trialled really well leading into it and was impressive on debut so, of the raced brigade, they look the two,” Freedman said.
Jamie Kah will ride Frost Flowers in the Blue Diamond Preview.
