Horse racing tips: Why mug tipster Mick Randall is going out big

Favourite colours, lucky numbers, catchy names and even a visit to your nearest fortune teller. It really can be whatever tickles your fancy when it comes to finding a winning nag at the racetrack.

For everyone, from your dedicated expert who spends hours each week with their nose in form or the fractious first-timer on the punt, the stakes are the same.

They want to win! And in most cases, more importantly, they want bragging rights.

So we’ve decided to pit our resident News Racing expert Chris Vernuccio against self-proclaimed punting mug Mick Randall in a winner-takes-all spring shootout.

Each week they will provide their best three tips.

And this weekend there will be nowhere to hide with two mega races to be contested, The Everest and the Caulfield Cup.

We’ll keep a running tally until the end of Melbourne Cup Week to reveal once and for all who is the best judge.

And for those looking for a little extra guidance, we suggest you check out our premium best bets and punting analysis below.

We have spring covered.

MICK’S MUG MARAUDERS

CAULFIELD CUP

MASTER OF WINE (Caulfield, R9 No. 11 — $7)

Have watched this thing ever since I drew the short straw and had to publish a story about it online. Hasn’t really done anything to suggest it can win, but it owes me from the past couple of starts I lost on it. Anyway, who doesn’t love a good red?

THE EVEREST

BEHEMOTH (Randwick R7 No. 5 — $9)

There’s just something about words that mean “really, really big”. Look, I’m a big bloke, so I like to bet on big things. Behemoth did me proud in the Sir Rupert Clark Stakes and that’s enough for me. I like to stay loyal — even if it can be to a fault (see Kolding toward the end of last spring).

BEST OF DAYS (RACE 8 No. 10 — $5.50)

Look, if you haven’t had the best of days, just google a Jamie Kah interview and you’re guaranteed to have a smile on your face. She’s a genuine sweetheart — and an absolute gun jockey to boot. Worried about Windstorm, that thing is a breeze, but we want to make some real coin, right?

CHRIS’S CASH ACCUMULATORS

CAULFIELD CUP

VERRY ELLEEGANT (Caulfield, R9 No. 7 — $5)

Fingers crossed the rain does arrive on race day because she goes even better with the sting out of the track. Her best performance was in the autumn when she won the Tancred Stakes — over the 2400m Caulfield Cup distance — by more than four lengths on a soft 7 track.

THE EVEREST

GYTRASH (Randwick, R7 No. 7 — $6.50)

The market is underrating the South Australian sprinter for The Everest despite his huge first-up win over Nature Strip. He’s been kept fresh and I’m expecting another dynamic performance from him whereas I think a few of his main rivals could be flat from racing two weeks ago.

FITUESE (Caulfield, R6 No. 3 — $2.80)

The Sydney mare is just a winner with six wins from her nine career starts, and she’s unbeaten at the 1100m. She’s got an excellent acceleration and a little bit of rain won’t hurt her chances.
