Manchester Utd legend Sir Alex Ferguson out to win Grand National

Swapping the football pitch for the racecourse, Sir Alex Ferguson could bag another big win in Liverpool this weekend.

The Manchester United legend is one of the owners of Randox Grand National runner Give Me A Copper.

The lightly-raced veteran chaser is set to tackle the 30 famous spruce fences in Saturday's big race.

Bookies have him priced up at odds of 66-1, as he has to bounce back from a disappointing run at Doncaster in January.

But the 11-year-old appears to have plenty of stamina for the marathon trip of more than four miles, as he won the Badger Beers Silver Trophy at Wincanton in 2019.

He also finished a close second on his return this season on the back of a 357-day break and a wind operation.

Give Me A Copper schooled over the National fences recently and trainer Paul Nicholls said: "He ran well at Doncaster first time then he didn’t run quite so well last time but I’ve always thought this race would suit him."

Fergie collected 38 trophies during his time with United, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues – and the layers believe fans will support him once more.

David Stevens, of Coral, said: "As Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson enjoyed nothing more than seeing his side win at Anfield.

"But as co-owner of leading Grand National contender Give Me A Copper Sir Alex could gain his most famous victory yet on Liverpudlian soil, with the 33-1 shot also sure to be a popular punt with United fans this Saturday."

Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: "Sir Alex is unlikely to need a copper with the amount of silverware that he denied the Merseyside Clubs over the years.

Grand National 2021

"But this Saturday the bookies could endure the biggest smash-and-grab away victory in Liverpool of his illustrious career.

"And given United's incredible support their fans and his wider adoring public will no doubt latch on to Give Me A Copper."
