Tony and Calvin McEvoy target the Gold Coast Magic Millions with Deep Speed
A Sydney pit stop produced the desired result for talented sprinter Deep Speed ahead of a trip to Queensland for a Magic Millions 3YO Guineas foray.
Trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy trialled their promising Listed placegetter at Canterbury on Tuesday with the son of Deep Field bound for the Sunshine State tonight after pulling up in top order from the hit out.
Deep Speed finished 1-1/2 lengths off the David Pfieffer-trained Rocketing By in second in an 890 heat on the morning but it was experience that proved most important for the stable.
“He has been working on the Sydney leg in Melbourne and we thought it would be nice for him to have a cruise around,” co-trainer Tony McEvoy said.
“We wanted to see him get some cover because we’ve never been able to get him behind other horses.
“Kerrin (McEvoy) said he flew out again but he got him to settle.
“He got a bit confused when Bowman’s horse (Whasir) came alongside him but once he focused again he hit the line well.”

Deep Speed has only experienced the Melbourne way of going in four starts, including his last two where he placed in Listed grade.
The talented sprinter last raced back at Moonee Valley on November 28 when he led the field up before finishing runner-up in the Listed McKenzie Stakes behind Ocean Beyond.
It encouraged the McEvoys to pursue a Magic Millions berth on the Gold Coast with Deep Speed to be based in Queensland from this week.
“He didn’t leave an oat this morning and will travel up tonight,” McEvoy said.
“He will run again on the 9th of January in a 1300m class four and all being well, we will back him up a week later.”
Deep Speed is currently a $51 chance for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with Luke Currie in the box seat for the ride.
