Vega One headlines capacity Group 1 field

Last start Kingsford-Smith winner Vega One is one of four Group 1 winners that headline a capacity field for this Saturday’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.

A full field of 18 runners as well as three emergencies was declared for the $1.5 million feature on Tuesday with the barrier draw to be conducted later this evening.

The Tony Gollan-trained Vega One is chasing back-to-back Group 1s after winning the Kingsford-Smith Cup last start on the back of a world class ride by Jamie Kah.

With Kah stuck in lockdown in Victoria, Sydney star Rachel King will take the reins on Vega One this weekend.

Gollan had hoped to launch a two-pronged attack in the Stradbroke however talented mare Outback Barbie has landed as the first emergency for the race.

The Goodwood victor Savatoxl, 2020 All Aged Stakes heroine Tofane and multiple Group 1 winner Mr Quickie will add further class to the Stradbroke field.

Mr Quickie will carry top weight of 56.5kg and will be aided by the services of James McDonald.

Hawkes Racing gun Wild Planet heads into the Stradbroke a month between runs after he was last seen rocketing home to grab second behind Eduardo in Queensland’s other sprint major, the Doomben 10,000.

Trent and Toby Edmonds are looking to defend their Stradbroke crown following Tyzone’s success in 2020 and have the North Queensland cult hero The Harrovian (53kg).

All conquering Sydney trainer Chris Waller has never won a Stradbroke Handicap and will saddle up three starters in his latest pursuit of the Group 1 with Imaging, Madam Rouge and Subpoenaed.

Fred Best Classic winner Apache Chase, trained by Desleigh Foster, will be the sole three-year-old in the race unless second emergency Amish Boy finds his way into the field.
