Chelsea boss Frank Lampard identifies top transfer target as £80m bid eyed

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is ready to go all out for Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz. The Germany international has been tipped to head to the Premier League this summer after impressing at Leverkusen. The 20-year-old, who has netted 14 goals and chipped in with seven assists in all competitions, has been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United.

And according to Spanish outlet TodoFichajes, Chelsea are ready to beat their Premier League rivals to Havertz.

They say Chelsea boss Lampard has made the attacking midfielder his top target.

The Blues are ready to pay £80m (€90M) for Havertz this summer.

Chelsea transfer chiefs are said to be confident of landing Havertz.

Despite the Blues going all out for the Leverkusen star, Liverpool hero Jan Molby claims Jurgen Klopp should sign the playmaker.

Molby says Havertz can have the same impact at Liverpool that Bruno Fernandes has had at United.

“It might hurt me to say this a little bit, but if you look at the impact Bruno Fernandes has had at Manchester United, now I would love Liverpool to sign that type of a midfield player,” he said.

“[I want] a midfield player that brings something different to what [James] Milner or [Naby] Keita or [Georginio] Wijnaldum or [Jordan] Henderson brings.

“Who would that be? The young boy Kai Havertz looks a really, really good player.

“Let’s wait and see and see what kind of money Liverpool have available to make transfers, but I think there are plenty of exciting young players out there.”

A lot has been made of Premier League sides battling for Havertz, however, ex-Germany defender Jens Nowotny says his countryman should stay put.

“He is on the way to becoming a world-class player. He has huge potential,” he said. “Another year in Leverkusen would certainly not hurt him.

“For his personal development as a player and as a person it would be good for him to be in an environment in which he feels comfortable – and that’s the case in Leverkusen.

“Otherwise he would not have already spent 10 years at the club.

“To fulfil his potential, the next step is very, very important.

“He has to ask himself questions: are there clubs where he can develop if there is a possible change? Or are there only clubs where he has to arrive and function as a finished player?

“On the one hand, you need coaches like Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho, who can take him further.

“On the other hand, such a coach also has to work for a club where he is allowed to develop.”

Chelsea signing Philippe Coutinho for £75m would leave Blues stars fuming – Gary Neville

Gary Neville says Chelsea’s stars would be fuming if the club spent £75m on Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho while they’re in talks over taking a pay cut due to the coronavirus pandemic. Express Sport understands Chelsea players, led by skipper Cesar Azpilicueta, have been in talks with the club over taking a 10 per cent pay cut with football postponed due to coronavirus.

While Chelsea’s stars have been locked in talks, the Blues have been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona’s Coutinho.

It’s claimed the Blues have been offered Coutinho, who is on loan at Bayern Munich, and he could cost around £75m.

And Manchester United hero Neville says Chelsea moving for Coutinho while cutting wages would be illogical.

The pundit added Chelsea’s stars would be well within their rights to ask for their wages back if Coutinho did join.

When asked about mammoth transfer fees being discussed despite players taking pay cuts, Neville said on Sky Sports’ Football Show: “It’s like a parallel universe.

“Azpilicueta is apparently in talks with the Chelsea board over a 10 or 15 per cent pay cut.

“Then to hear on the next breath, if you’re a Chelsea player looking at a pay deferral or cut, about them looking to buy Coutinho for £75m, they’ll be thinking ‘well which one is it?’.

“If I was a player in a dressing room, I would look at a deferral that turns into a cut at a certain point in time.

“But if the club increase their transfer budget or sign a player for £75m, you have to pay our money first.

“They can’t say they can’t pay players then go and spend £75m on a player. It’s just illogical, it doesn’t make sense.”

Brazil international Coutinho has struggled to impress since quitting Liverpool in 2018.

And Neville’s Sky Sports colleague Jamie Redknapp agrees that Coutinho to Chelsea doesn’t make sense, with the Liverpool hero claiming Frank Lampard should stick with Mason Mount.

Redknapp added: “I don’t see this one as a goer. It’s an awful lot of money.

“I really like him, he’s an extremely talented player but he doesn’t get enough goals.

“They’ve got Mason Mount there too. Frank’s obviously given a lot of trust in the young players and they’ve come through.

“Willian and Pedro are out of contract this summer but I just don’t see them spending £79m on a player, especially with the way the club’s been run in recent years.

“When you’ve got Mason Mount coming through, why would you want to risk him not having the opportunities? He’s a top player himself.”
