Man United SUE Football Manager creators over trademark infringement

Manchester United SUING creators of popular Football Manager video game series over alleged trademark infringement due to use of club’s name

  • Manchester United are suing the makers of Football Manager video game series
  • The club alleges that the game infringes its trademark by using the club’s name
  • They are taking action against Sega Publishing and developer Sports Interactive
  • United also argue that the game infringes its trademark over the club’s crest

Manchester United are suing the creators of the Football Manager video game series due to the popular franchise allegedly infringing its trademark by using the club’s name.

United claimed that their name features ‘extensively throughout the game’, and have taken legal action against Sega Publishing and developer Sports Interactive.

The club have also argued that both companies infringed its trademark over its logo, due to the simulation not using the official United crest. The logo has instead been replaced by ‘a simplified red and white striped’ design.

Manchester United are suing the creators of the popular Football Manager video game series

United believe that this depiction ‘deprives the registered proprietor of its right to have the club crest licensed’.

Sega Publishing and Sports Interactive said they have been legitimately using United’s name in a football context across all versions of Football Manager, and its predecessor, Championship Manager, since 1992 without complaint.

The two companies accused United of attempting to ‘prevent legitimate competition in the video games field by preventing parties not licensed by the claimant from using the name of Manchester United football team within such games’.

United barrister Simon Malynicz, at a preliminary remote hearing on Friday, said that the club’s name ‘is one of the world’s most valuable and recognised brands’ – and also explained that the money teams make from licensing their names and logos was significant.

The club alleges that the game infringes its trademark by using its name and took legal action

Sega Publishing and Sports Interactive say they’ve been using Manchester United’s name across all Football Manager games for over a decade without any complaints

Malynicz alleged that ‘consumers expect’ to see United’s crest next to the name of the club, and that the failure of Football Manager to do this ‘amounts to wrongful use’.

Sega and Sports Interactive also ‘encouraged’ the use of downloadable patches containing replica trademarks, supplied by third parties, Malynicz also said.

United alleged that the defendants ‘directly benefited from it by avoiding the need to take any licence and enjoying increased sales of their game’.

Roger Wyand QC, representing Sega and Sports Interactive, argued that the ‘simplified’ club badge used for United in the game ‘was one of 14 generic logo templates that is randomly chosen by the Football Manager game engine each time a new game is started’.

United also argued an infringement of its trademark over its logo due to a ‘simplified design’

Wyand also explained that copies of the game had been sent to a number of United officials and players for several years, and that ‘there have been a number of positive press comments and tweets about the game by them’.

In the written defence to United’s claim, Wyand added: ‘Further, the claimant’s staff working in the data analytics and scouting teams have contacted SI on various occasions asking for access to the Football Manager database for scouting and research purposes.’

The case judge, Mr Justice Morgan, reserved his judgment on United’s application to amend its claim to a later date.

Scott McTominay mocks Man Utd teammate Dan James over 5k challenge performance

Daniel James confessed he was forced to give up halfway through his attempt to keep up with Manchester United teammate Scott McTominay during a 5k run.

The Scotland international has been anointed as the club’s undisputed long-distance running king following his exploits over the course of the lockdown imposed by the government during the coronavirus crisis.

McTominay astonished his colleagues and coaches alike after he posted a time of 16 minutes and one second last month. Prior to lockdown, James revealed the pair embarked on a run together, but the former Swansea winger, noted for his sprinting prowess, was left trailing in the United academy graduate’s wake.

James, speaking on the adidas #hometeam huddle YouTube channel, said: ‘Just before lockdown I went for a 5k run with you didn’t I and after the first 1k I think you lost me. I did 2.5k and I ended up going home. You were saying ‘where have you gone?’

Recalling the incident, McTominay added: ‘I was waiting for him at the finishing line and I’m thinking ‘where’s he at?’

McTominay, who only recently returned from a two-month injury lay-off, has been using the hiatus to build up his fitness and he caused a stir on Saturday after he posted a picture of him showing off his chiseled torso.

The image, posted on Instagram, certainly caught the eye of his new midfield partner Bruno Fernandes, who commented ‘Scottyyyyyy training with the ball is really important, don’t forget that’.

In conversation with James, McTominay did admit that with a return to competitive action on the horizon, it was important for him to start concentrating on building up his speed over shorter distances.

He said: ‘As we get a little bit closer to football coming back we’ve got to be doing more of the short sharp stuff with the ball.

‘And obviously Jamo is a good exmaple of that someone I’ve got to get to his level for being sharp.’

Gomes was first offered a new deal at the start of the season and improved contracts have been put forward since but a resolution has not been found.

He was reportedly offered £25,000 a week to sign an extension but his representatives were thought to be concerned at his lack of game time.

Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams have both been given chances in the first team and Gomes is desperate to follow in their footsteps.

However, fellow academy player Tahith Chong signed a new contract in March hope that would lead to Gomes agreeing fresh terms.

Chelsea have been linked with the midfielder but last month he suggested he wanted to stay at Old Trafford and go on to win trophies with the club.

‘I’ve seen it over the years, coming up from the academy and being at United my whole career,’ said Gomes during a Google Hangout on the club’s official website.

‘It’s what I want to go on to do – win trophies for the club.’

The youngster captained England under-19s to World Cup success in 2018.

Man United and Chelsea linked with £60m deal for Moussa Dembele

Manchester United and Chelsea on red alert after Lyon president admits he may have to sell this summer… with Premier League giants eyeing £60m deal for striker Moussa Dembele

  • Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas revealed he may be forced to sell this summer
  • The revelation comes with the Ligue 1 side having failed to qualify for Europe
  • Striker Moussa Dembele is interesting Premier League duo Man Utd and Chelsea
  • The French 23-year-old scored 22 goals in all competitions for Lyon this season

Manchester United and Chelsea are keeping an eye on developments with Lyon’s star striker Moussa Dembele after the club president revealed he may be forced to sell players this summer.

The Premier League giants are courting the 23-year-old former Celtic man, who has scored 22 goals in all competitions this season.

Chelsea were unsuccessful in their January pursuit of the Frenchman but may be encouraged to try again, with the Ligue 1 side reportedly willing to listen to offers in the region of £60m, after the revelation of president Jean-Michel Aulas.

Lyon’s star striker Moussa Dembele could leave the club for around £60million this summer

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas says he may be forced to sell after not qualifying for Europe

‘I am going to do everything to keep the players,’ the Lyon chief told French outlet Le Progres.

‘But players who are programmed to play in Europe could want to go elsewhere because we don’t have European football.’

With the Ligue 1 season already cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, Lyon will not be playing in Europe after finishing in seventh, as positions were decided on a points-per-game basis.

As such, they could be open to allowing their star man to leave, who has scored 42 goals in 88 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Dembele first impressed while playing for Brendan Rodgers’ successful Celtic team

He moved back to France from Celtic in January 2018 after a successful period in Scotland, where he won the Scottish Premiership, Cup and League Cup twice.

He previously played for Fulham as a teenager after joining from PSG’s youth team in 2012.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are looking for competition for Tammy Abraham up front, with Michy Batshuayi set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also in the market for a new frontman, particularly if they decide not to sign Odion Ighalo permanently from Shanghai Shenhua.

Man City 'in talks over signing Semedo.. with Cancelo moving to Barca'

Manchester City ‘in advanced talks with Barcelona over signing Nelson Semedo… with Joao Cancelo moving in the other direction’

  • Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen on signing Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo
  • The City manager is willing to part with Joao Cancelo to make the deal happen
  • Cancelo signed from Juventus for £60m last year but has failed to make his mark
  • Barca have set a £39m asking price for Semedo but could be interested in a swap

Barcelona and Manchester City are reportedly in advanced talks over a swap plus cash deal involving Nelson Semedo and Joao Cancelo.

Pep Guardiola is keen to bring Semedo to the Etihad and is willing to part with money and offer his former club Cancelo in order to reach a deal.

Cancelo only moved to City from Juventus for £60m last summer but has not cemented a spot in the first-team, and as such City are willing to let him leave to facilitate Semedo’s arrival, with an agreement likely to be reached in the coming weeks, according to Spanish outlet SPORT.

Manchester City are keen on signing Barcelona right back Nelson Semedo this summer

City are reportedly willing to offer Joao Cancelo as a like-for-like replacement in a swap deal

Nelson Semedo

  • Appearances: 29
  • Goals: 0
  • Assists: 5
  • Yellows/Reds: 4/0

Joao Cancelo

  • Appearances: 24
  • Goals: 1
  • Assists: 1
  • Yellows/Reds: 3/0

Statistics in all competitions in 2019-20

The report details that Barca have given Semedo’s representative, super-agent Jorge Mendes, permission to negotiate his exit, with the club setting an asking price of £39m (€45m).

Talks over a new contract for Semedo have stalled recently, and with the Portuguese’s current deal expiring in 2022, Barca are keen to cash in on him before his value falls – but could be swayed with a satisfactory player-plus-cash exchange.

Semedo reportedly was keen to leave last summer in search of regular first-team football, but opted to stay.

He has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season as Barca lead Real Madrid by two points at the top of La Liga, before the coronavirus crisis halted football across Europe in the middle of March.

Man City manager Pep Guardiola is keen to sign Semedo from his former club Barcelona

For City, a deal which involves Cancelo moving in the other direction works perfectly, with Semedo a like-for-like replacement at right back.

The former Juve man has made just 11 Premier League appearances this season and has been unable to usurp Kyle Walker in defence.

Thus the two Portuguese right backs, who were born just six months apart, could swap clubs this summer should the two European heavyweights come to an agreement.

There are several Premier League teams also said to be in the hunt, though, with Manchester City and Wolves both admirers of the young winger.

But Real Madrid have stolen a march on their rivals by sending their chief scout out to watch him before the coronavirus shutdown.

Real Madrid have a good relationship with Penarol having bought Fede Valverde from them

Real, though, know they face stiff competition for his signature, with Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors and Flamengo joining the two Premier League sides in the hunt.

The Spanish giants will be boosted with the knowledge that they have a good relationship with Penarol, having bought one of their current biggest stars in Fede Valverde from them back in 2016.

Barcelona and Manchester City ‘eyeing move for Benfica defender Ruben Dias despite £87million release clause in his contract’

  • Ruben Dias has a long-term contract until the summer of 2024 at Benfica
  • But his agent Jorge Mendes has reportedly offered his services to Barcelona
  • The Catalan giants may consider him as a replacement for Samuel Umtiti
  • But Man City boss Pep Guardiola is also said to be interested in his services
  • Caglar Soyuncu and Kalidou Kouliably also reportedly feature on City’s shortlist

Barcelona and Manchester City feature prominently on the list of clubs wanting to sign Benfica defender Ruben Dias, according to reports in Portugal.

The 22-year-old has a long-term contract until the summer of 2024 at the Portuguese side, and his current deal reportedly includes an enormous £87million (100million euros) release clause.

However, that has reportedly not put off the Spanish and Premier League giants who are both considering a move for Dias, according to Portuguese outlet Record.

Manchester City and Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a move for defender Ruben Dias

The Benfica and Portugal centre-back has a reported £87million release clause in his contract

The report claims that the centre-back’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has offered his services to the Catalan giants as a potential long-term replacement to Frenchman Samuel Umtiti.

But Man City boss Pep Guardiola is also allegedly an admirer of the Portugal international, who has made 51 appearances across all competitions for club and country this season.

Dias’ name therefore reportedly features on a shortlist which also includes Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

But Jorge Mendes has allegedly offered him to Barcelona as a replacement for Samuel Umtiti

The report also states Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira’s idea is to resist selling his star players for low fees this year given the economic impact that will continue to hit football due to the coronavirus crisis.

Dias has two goals and one assists in 24 Primiera Liga appearances this campaign for the Lisbon giants.

His only other goal this season came in the Europa League against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Round of 32 back in February.

Pep Guardiola is also said to be an admirer of the 22-year-old Portugal international though

Odion Ighalo names the Man Utd star that's impressed him most in training

Manchester United forward Odion Ighalo has revealed Anthony Martial is the player that’s impressed him most since his move to Old Trafford.

The Nigerian completed a shock move to the north-west in January when he signed a short-term loan deal from Shanghai Shenhua.

The 30-year-old is a lifelong United fan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on signing the Nigerian on a permanent basis this summer after he bagged four goals in his first eight appearances.

Ighalo’s lifted the mood at the club since his arrival and he’s brought out the best in other players around him, including Martial.

The Frenchman was in sensational form before the Premier League was forced into suspension and when asked to name the player he’s been most impressed with, Ighalo named Martial.

‘Anthony, since I came, he’s been scoring goals and doing so well, fighting a lot. He is a great player, he has great technique,’ said Ighalo.

He can do anything with the ball and he’s been doing fantastically well. I just hope he keeps going and scoring more goals and we end the season very well.

‘Watching it from outside it’s different. You only watch games every weekend and see how skilful he is. But I train with this guy every day, you understand? Every blessed day I train with him, and it’s incredible what he does in training, do you understand? He does it so easy, you know?

‘Sometimes in games it’s difficult to do it, sometimes you face a tougher opponent but this is someone who every day you see in training and say wow, he’s a good player.

United are still working on a deal for Ighalo and are confident that a fee of around £15m can be agreed.

The forward’s loan deal runs until June but that could be extended as the Premier League is likely to run beyond that date.

Premier League bosses hope to resume the season on June 6th, though the date susceptible to further delays.
