Matteo Berrettini has joked that he felt he couldn’t “screw up” when stepping in to replace Roger Federer on Team Europe against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Federer confirmed this week that his final match before retiring would come on Friday night, meaning an alternate would need to be brought in as his replacement.

He said while laughing: “I feel like I cannot screw up.

“It’s actually unbelievable. Yesterday I couldn’t sleep and one of the reasons was he was crying on my shoulder and I was like ‘is that real?’.

“Today he gave me a couple of tips and it worked out pretty well so thanks Roger.”
